The piglet seller was given the name Ding Long, whose date of birth was probably 1857, and he was from Guangdong, China. He grew up poor, never read any books, and was sold to the United States at the age of 18. Around 1870, Ding Long became a retinue of Carpentier, an American who graduated from Columbia University and was a lawyer. But Carpentier was very rich, because in 1849 he discovered gold in California.
Through the gold mines, Carpentier received his first money and founded the Bank of California, where he was president. Not only that, but Carpentier also built a new city on an unused land, which is Oakland, which is now part of California. Oakland is well located on the west side of San Francisco Bay, across the sea from San Francisco, and to the north is the famous university city of Berkeley. But what he did not expect was that Ding Long did not leave, and made him breakfast, and Carpentier was very touched to see Ding Long. Apologize to him and promise that you will definitely get rid of your bad temper. When asked why you didn't leave, Ding Long said that although your temper is not good, you are a good person, and confucius said that once you follow someone, you should fulfill your responsibilities. With such diligence, Carpentier naturally trusted him and hired him as his butler.
Carpentier planned to leave California in 1889, and Ding Long followed him to New York. According to the information that historians have reluctantly collected, Ding Long's personality is very quiet and he is very friendly to the people around him. In 1890, Ding Long first appeared in the report of American statistics as a Chinese maid at Carpentier's residence. Ten years later, however, the record became Carpentier's friend, with a markedly different status.
People's hearts are all flesh, and what true heart can be exchanged for true heart is also true heart, and Carpentier later asked Ding Long what he wanted in return. This time, Ding Long's answer was very surprising, he said, he hopes to establish a department of sinology at Columbia University, so that Americans can better understand China's ancient civilization. In order to fulfill his wish, Carpentier donated $100,000 to Columbia University in June 1901, hoping to establish a department of sinology. At the same time, he wrote in a letter to the president: May you name him Ding Long Chair Professor of Sinology.
Ding Long himself also donated his years of savings together, which amounted to 12,000 US dollars, which was not a lot of money in that era. At that time, one dollar was exchanged for 1.37 grams of gold. At that time Chinese status was not high, and the president of Columbia University was hesitant to do so, and Carpentier said very directly that there was no problem with his identity. However, because of Ding Long's relationship, Carpentier has done business in China many times and made a lot of money.
At that time, Cixi also heard about this incident and donated a valuable amount of books, and Li Hongzhang and others also donated a lot. But since then, Ding Long has never heard from him again, and there is no record of him anywhere. Did he return home or in the United States? Is it life or death? No one knows that the world-famous Ding Long has disappeared, and for more than a hundred years, countless historians have wanted to study his more information and whereabouts. And Carpentier has also done a lot of things, because of Ding Long, he also has different feelings for China. He came to China many times to make donations, and later Sun Yat-sen studied medicine and engaged in revolutionary activities in boji medical hall also received donations from him. In addition, he donated 500,000 US dollars to the Department of Sinology of Columbia University, and donated funds to the Department of Sinology several times, and established scholarships in various titles. Carpentier himself never married and died in 1918.
