8K giant screen, electronic ink body one-click color change, BMW CES big show black technology

At CES 2022, the BMW Group made a stunning debut with a number of innovative digital achievements, including four new themed modes, BMW suspension giant screens, BMW electric vehicle acoustic simulation and "e-ink" technology.

Among them, the most attractive thing is that BMW released the "cinema mode" future in-car entertainment system for the first time - "BMW suspended giant screen" and "electronic ink" to achieve the one-click color change function of the body.

The "BMW Floating Giant Screen" features a 31-inch ultra-wide panoramic display with a resolution of up to 8K, cleverly integrated into the car's canopy, extending from the canopy to the front seat backrest. Wei Bofan, director of research and development at the BMW Group, said: "Under the 'cinema mode', the rear space of the vehicle will become a private cinema. With a 31-inch ultra-wide 8K resolution display, 5G connectivity, surround sound, and customized streaming programs, BMW creates an unprecedented experience that sets a new benchmark for in-car entertainment. "In terms of content, BMW will also work with local Chinese suppliers to provide cutting-edge entertainment content that meets the preferences of Chinese users." The BMW suspension giant screen has also undergone multiple crash tests, providing BMW customers with an immersive digital journey that is safe enough to ensure the safety of passengers.

The unique technology of "e-ink" is a latest research achievement of BMW, which successfully realizes the one-button color change function of the body on the innovative BMW iX. "E-ink" contains millions of transparent microcapsules, just the thickness of a single hair. Each microcapsule contains a negatively charged white pigment, as well as a positively charged black pigment. By controlling the electrodes on both sides of the microcapsule, the desired color appears on the body surface. BMW manufactures different sizes of "electronic ink" according to the pattern and the curvature of the car surface, which is then fixed to the car, and finally achieves a key change of color through the change of electrodes.

In addition, "electronic ink" in the body color change at the same time, in addition to personalized needs, but also conducive to reducing energy consumption, can be adjusted through the dark and light colors of the vehicle self-absorption of heat, change the car temperature, reduce energy consumption.

BMW's new "theme mode" goes beyond traditional user interface design to open up a multi-sensory immersive experience for users by building immersive experiences such as touch, hearing and vision. Relax and Expressive will be available in the second half of 2022, when users can get a new theme mode through the remote upgrade of the OTA.

The BMW Group, together with the internationally renowned composer Hans Zimmer, successfully created the sound of the future electric vehicle - BMW electric vehicle acoustic simulation. Outside, BMW has specially designed a pedestrian acoustic warning function, so that pedestrians can sense that there is a vehicle nearby to ensure safety. Inside the car, BMW designed exclusive sound effects for each "theme mode", each sound effect has a rich sense of layering, and all match the visual effects presented under different "theme modes".
