According to the US Capitol Hill newspaper, Iranian President Lehi said in a speech at the memorial service for the anniversary of Suleimani's murder on Monday that Trump and Pompeo should be "tried in an impartial court" for the assassination of Sulaimani. He called Trump a "lawbreaker," a "murderer, and a "criminal."

According to Reuters, Lehi said: "If Trump and Pompeo do not stand trial in a fair court for the crime of assassinating Suleimani ... The Muslim world will avenge our martyrs. ”

"The main offenders, murderers and criminals, the (former) president of the United States, must be tried and punished according to the will of the Allah," Leahy said.

Sulaimani and Deputy Commander of the Iraqi militia "People's Mobilization Group" Muhandis were reportedly killed in a US drone attack at Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020. The incident pushed Tehran and Washington to the brink of war, and Iran has repeatedly vowed to avenge the crime.

The Trump administration initially claimed that Soleimani was assassinated on the grounds that he was allegedly linked to the deadly rocket attack on the U.S. military base in Kirkuk, Iraq, in December 2019, and the December 31, 2019 incident in which protesters tried to storm the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, as well as posing an "imminent threat" to U.S. national security.

Iraqi intelligence later concluded that the attack on the U.S. military base in Kirkuk was most likely carried out by the Islamic State extremist group (ISIS). Washington then changed its narrative, saying there was no specific intelligence pointing to any "imminent threat" from Soleimani. Later, Trump also justified the assassination, including claiming that Soleimani was killed in part because he was "speaking ill of america" and was a "well-known terrorist."

The former U.S. president and his staff have no regrets about their actions. Trump also boasted last summer that he had "caught" Sulaimani and Islamic State leader Baghdadi, calling the two men two "monsters" and boasting that they were "bigger" than al-Qaida leader bin Laden.
