Amazon has struck a deal with Stellantis to purchase Dodge Pr in 2023

Amazon announced that it will buy an unknown number of electric delivery vehicles from Stellantis in 2023. The automaker has previously said it will launch an all-electric version of its Dodge ProMaster commercial vehicle that year. Stellantis, a company formed last year by a merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and France's PSA Group, did not officially disclose specific details of the electric vans.

But Amazon says it will be the first commercial customer when they finally go into production, and the two companies will have "thousands" of electric vans on the road.

Amazon has been working with Rivian, one of the hot electric car companies that went public in the biggest IPO of all time last year. Amazon owns about 20 percent of the company, and plans to order 100,000 vans from Rivian in the future, which is seen as one of the largest eviction purchase orders in history.

In addition to the Dodge electric vehicle deal, Amazon and Stallantis announced that they will collaborate to develop in-vehicle software for Stellantis' range of cars, trucks and vans. The two companies say the deal will enable Amazon to integrate its software into "millions" of vehicles.

The two companies will collaborate on the development of The Stellantis Automotive's "Digital Cockpit" infotainment system software, which will be launched in 2024. Stellantis said it will use Amazon's Alexa technology for voice control functions, "navigation, vehicle maintenance, e-commerce marketplaces and payment services."

While that's not the same as Volvo handing over its car operating system entirely to Google's Android system, it does give Amazon a stronger foothold in the auto industry and could help Stallantis compete with other software-leading car companies like Tesla.

This isn't the first collaboration between Amazon and Stallantis. The two companies announced earlier last year that the 2022 jeep wagger and Grand Wagoneer would be the first vehicles to be equipped with an in-car Amazon FireTV. Amazon's software can be accessed from the main display and rear seat screen, but there will be filters that prevent drivers from watching the show while the vehicle is in motion.
