According to public information, Wang Gang was a tenured professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and one of the 10 young scientific and technological innovation talents under the age of 35 in Asia selected by the global MIT. Research areas include deep learning and its applications in computer vision and autonomous driving.

After joining Ali Damo Academy in 2017, Wang Gang was the chief scientist of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and presided over the development of the first generation of the Tmall Genie AI system. During his tenure as head of the autonomous driving laboratory of DAMO Academy, Wang Gang and his team are working on developing the next generation of embedded intelligent machine visual understanding system, and building Alibaba's unmanned logistics system with this as the core, including unmanned delivery vehicles, unmanned trucks, sorting robots, etc.

In September 2011, Wang Gang said that DAMO Academy is developing the L4 self-driving truck "Big Wild Donkey", and has now cooperated with Cainiao to start a small-scale road test. It is expected that in three years, unmanned trucks will be seen on tens of thousands of public roads.
