The crime rate of all major crimes in New York City will rise in 2021

According to statistics released by the New York City Police (NYPD), the crime rate of murder, rape, robbery and other major crimes in New York City in 2021 has increased to varying degrees. The number of major crimes in 2021 exceeded 100,000, the first time since 2016.

In addition to murder, rape, and robbery, there are felony assaults, burglary, grand larceny, and grand car thefts, of which a total of 22,486 felony attacks occurred in 2021, an increase of 9.6% over 2020. It also set a record high since 2001. Another major crime with significant growth is major car theft, which totaled 10.25 million in 2021, up 14.9% from 8,921 in 2020.

Meanwhile, there were a total of 479 murders in 2021, an increase of 4.1 percent compared to 460 in 2020. A total of 1,475 rapes, up 3.3% from 1,428 in 2020; 13,575 robberies, up 4.7% from 1.2963 in 2020; and 39,957 major thefts, up 13.3% from 35,254 in 2020.

The only major crime category in which the crime rate has declined is burglary, which totaled 12,508 in 2021, down 18.6% from 15,367 in 2020. However, compared to 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic, it is still up 17%.

Gun violence has been one of the main negative factors affecting social order in New York City for nearly two years. In 2021, there were a total of 1,546 incidents of gun violence in New York City, with 1,857 victims, an increase of about 101 percent and 103 percent, respectively, over 2019.

Mayor Eric Adam said at the roundtable on curbing gun violence held on the 2nd that the number of gun violence cases in 2021 soared by about 104%, and plans to form an undercover police anti-gun department to fight criminal gangs and prevent guns from flowing into New York City. Meanwhile, the new city police chief, Keechant Sewell, has re-emphasized his determination to crack down on illegal guns.
