In the second year of Lin De (665), Li Zhi took Wuhou to Taishan to seal Zen, and on the way deliberately stopped in Henan, entering the door and asking Zhang Gongyi how to manage the house. Zhang Gongyi did not dare to be idle, leading the emperor and empress to visit around, Li Zhi looked around, found that the Zhang family is a collective life, 900 people divided into 400 living areas, land and family property are publicly owned.
Zhang Gongyi introduced to Li Zhi that it is not difficult for 900 people to eat together, and every time they eat, they beat gongs and drums to distinguish between men and women, the older generation sits on the table, the younger generation sits down, and the children set up tables with each other. There is no distinction between high and low grades of food eaten, it is basically the same, and there will be no contradictions. Li Zhi listened to the praise and had the idea of studying for graduate school in his heart.
He gave Zhang Gongyi a problem, gave him two pears, and asked him to divide the pears. Li Guang originally thought that he would see Zhang Gongyi's confused look, who knew that Zhang Gongyi was not in a hurry, and asked someone to take this pear to the stone mortar to crush, and then add it to the water tank to stir evenly, and called on the whole family to come over, and each person took a spoon to taste the pear juice.
Li Zhi was also convinced when he saw it, and asked Zhang Gongyi's secret of governing the family. Zhang Gongyi asked people to bring a piece of paper and write 100 "forbearance" words on it as an answer. He said that the family training of the Zhang family is to know how to be humble and tolerant, parents and children understand each other, brothers and sisters help each other, do not care about gains and losses between concubines, do not argue loudly between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, and only people with "forbearing" character can be in the Zhang family.
