Zhao Nanqi's grandfather, a prominent leader of the resistance against Japan, was persecuted by the authorities and in 1940 the family moved to live in a Korean village in Jilin, China.
In 1947, at the age of 20, Zhao Nanqi joined the Communist Party of China, and in 1945, Zhao Nanqi joined the ranks of the Chinese revolution. He participated in the rural land reform work, and a year later he was promoted to the chief of the general affairs section of the prefectural party committee. Graduated from the Command Department of the Plaster Logistics College with a college degree.
In 1950, he joined the Chinese Volunteer Army, during which time he served as a staff officer, responsible for translation and liaison.
On one occasion, Peng Dehuai, commander-in-chief of the Volunteer Army, held talks with the deputy prime minister of the DPRK, with Cho Nam-ki as an interpreter. When the deputy prime minister saw that Cho Nam-ki spoke Korean fluently, he asked in surprise, "Are you a North Korean?" ”。

After the war, Zhao Nanqi returned to China, and he successively served as deputy director of the Political Department of the Yanbian Military Region, director of the General Logistics Department, and president of the PLA Academy of Military Sciences. He was also awarded the rank of general, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and an official to the rank of vice-state. In June 2018, Zhao Nanqi died of illness in Beijing at the age of 91.
