At the age of 16, Yang Xiushan joined the Red Army, and his first battle was over. The Red Army was ordered to attack Moshanpu in Huarong County, Hunan, and Yang Xiushan rushed to the front, not knowing how to dodge, and his leg was hit by the enemy.
Due to his bravery in battle, Yang Xiushan was promoted to squad leader after the war. In 1935, Yang Xiushan became the political commissar of the regiment. In the battle of Yangjiahe, in order to achieve greater results, Yang Xiushan took advantage of the victory to pursue, but unexpectedly was shot in the neck, almost killed, and lay in the hospital for several months.
After recovering from his wounds, Yang Xiushan took part in the Battle of Chestnut Garden, where a shell landed at his feet and exploded, injuring his right leg with shrapnel. Although the surgery was performed, due to poor conditions, only one piece of shrapnel was removed, and he still had 14 pieces of shrapnel in his leg.
Subsequently, Yang Xiushan followed the Red Second Front to start the Long March, although not as difficult as other troops, but also often encountered fierce battles. In the Battle of Liujia, Yang Xiushan was the political commissar of the Red Eighteenth Regiment, and when he was hit in the head when blocking the enemy, he did not care, and continued to fight after bandaging.
After the founding of New China, Yang Xiushan often had headaches, and he went to the hospital to check to find out that there were 7 pieces of shrapnel in his head. Yang Xiushan's most dangerous injury was in the battle in Chengxian County, Gansu Province, in September 1936.
In the fierce battle, the bullet pierced Xiushan's buttocks and broke all the bones, and the operation did not remove the broken bones, he endured torture all the time, and later he transferred to Xi'an for treatment before removing the broken bones.
Due to his multiple injuries, Yang Xiushan was rated as a second-class B disability after the founding of the People's Republic of China, and there were still 21 fragments in his body, which had been torturing him. In November 2002, Yang Xiushan died at the age of 88, and 21 fragments were found in his ashes.
