Majestic and beautiful - Landscape paintings of Hu Jiang

Text/Shao Dazhen

Hu Jiang's landscape painting has its own personality style, it combines majestic and beautiful beauty, integrates realistic techniques and pen and ink interests in one, has both the vitality directly from nature, and the meticulous processing and cutting of art, expressing his subjective feelings in the face of nature. In the early days, Hu Jiang engaged in pottery and sculpture art creation, and was fascinated by calligraphy. On this basis, he transferred to the field of Chinese painting, specializing in landscape painting, studying the chapter methods and brush and ink of traditional landscape painting, with the Lingnan innovator Chen Jinzhang and the Northern School master Li Kejian painting inheritor Li Baolin as his teachers, and through arduous exploration, gradually formed a unique painting appearance. Hu Jiang's landscape paintings do not have the habit of the old literati to paint Chen Chen Xiangyin, some of which are the ability to describe natural scenery and traditional freehand techniques, the breath is fresh, the style is pure, and people ponder its meaning in appreciation.

In the 20th century, traditional Chinese paintings, including landscape painting, faced the challenge of western painting realism methods. Initially, the painters' ideological entanglement was to follow the sketch model of Western painting, or to follow the brush and ink of literati painting. After repeated debates and the practical exploration of painters, a general common understanding has emerged: the literati brush and ink modeling system can still open up new paths through the efforts of "opening up the present with the past"; the fusion of realism and freehand techniques of Chinese and Western methods to create a new style of Chinese painting is another important innovative way. The Lingnan School of painting with international vision and local characteristics is one of the main schools in the field of Chinese painting that adheres to the direction of combining Chinese and Western styles. It is impossible for Hu Jiang's landscape paintings not to be influenced by the Lingnan painting style, but in today's developed information and frequent cultural exchanges, Hu Jiang, like many contemporary artists, has greatly reduced his enthusiasm for the regionality of the school. They have learned a wide range of sources, absorbed nutrition from all aspects, and thought about how to make their works have the spirit of traditional culture and the style of the times, so that their works can be more artistically expressive.

Most of Hu Jiang's landscape painting materials come from the Lingnan region, and the Lingnan landscape with a dexterous appearance and a strong inner quality is just suitable for him to express it with both realistic and freehand painting techniques. He exerts his existing modeling ability, but also strives to combine realistic techniques into the calligraphy-based pen and ink structure, giving the picture imagery. He attaches great importance to the overall momentum of the block shape, the mountains and mountains have a majestic and vigorous spirit, not delicate, not trivial; at the same time, the pen and ink kung fu of outlining the dots is in place, and there is no lack of soft and gentle charm. It is not unreasonable for people to say that his artistic creation is a southerner and a northern phase. Hu Jiang has this album with the title "Jiangshan Xiangyun", which shows his strong interest in painting clouds. Clouds are an integral part of landscapes, and where there is sky, there are clouds. Sometimes even if the cloud is not painted in the work, the blank space makes people associate with the cloud. Clouds are gases that exhibit various colors under the influence of light. Clouds have a "real" shape, but this shape is constantly changing, and it is varied. These allow artists to describe them by observing and giving full play to their imagination.

The clouds in Hujiang landscape paintings, either thick or light, or explicit or hidden, or ink smeared, or applied with color, are properly handled naturally and in harmony with the posture of the mountains. These patterns, which he calls "auspicious clouds", reflect his serene, peaceful character and blessings for the stability and peace of today's society.
