Young archaeologist He Kunyu died of illness and participated in the excavation of Jinsha ruins and Baodun sites

Red Star News reporter learned today (29th) that He Kunyu, a researcher at the Chengdu Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and a well-known young archaeologist, died of illness at the age of 41.

Born in 1980, He Kunyu, a native of Hunan, graduated from Sichuan University and joined the Chengdu Cultural Relics and Archaeology Task Force (the predecessor of the Chengdu Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology), whose main research direction is animal archaeology. He also has the identity of the station manager of the Baodun Ruins Workstation.

He Kunyu has been engaged in field archaeological excavations on the front line for a long time, and the sites involved in the excavations include jinsha sites, Songjiaheba sites, Tang song neighborhood ruins in Jiangnanguan Street, and Baodun ruins in Xinjin County. Among them, the Tang and Song Dynasty neighborhood sites of Jiangnanguan Street that he participated in the excavation won the "2008 National Top Ten Archaeological New Discoveries", and the "Archaeological Excavation and Research of zhaoguo cave site in Gui'an New District, Guizhou" was selected as one of the top ten new archaeological discoveries in China in 2020.

On the ruins of Baodun Ancient City, where he devoted a lot of effort to the excavation and research during his lifetime, a brand-new exhibition hall has now been built and will soon be opened to the public "Tianfu Root Baodun Ruins and Baodun Culture Exhibition". Baodun culture is the earliest archaeological culture that can be traced back to the Chengdu Plain, and it is also an important Neolithic archaeological culture in the Chengdu Plain.

According to the relevant person in charge of the Chengdu Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, they will send special personnel to He Kunyu's hometown in Hunan to mourn and comfort the family.
