The reporter learned from the Chengdu Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology on December 30 that Comrade He Kunyu, a research librarian and a well-known young archaeologist of the institute, died at the age of 41 in Rucheng County, Chenzhou City, Hunan Province, at 13:40 on December 29, 2021 due to illness.
Comrade He Kunyu, male, Han ethnicity, born on April 18, 1980 in Rucheng County, Hunan Province. He graduated from Sichuan University with a bachelor's degree in archaeology and museum in 2003, a master's degree in archaeology from Peking University in 2006, and a ph.D. in archaeology from Sichuan University in 2021. Since joining the Chengdu Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology in 2003, he has been rated as a librarian of cultural research in 2019, served as the deputy director of the second department of exploration and excavation, and is currently a member of the United Front Committee of the General Branch of the Party Of the Chengdu Municipal Cultural Relics and Archaeology Task Force of the Communist Party of China and the director of the Baodun Site Workstation.
Comrade He Kunyu is an outstanding business backbone and young talents of the Chengdu Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, who has long adhered to the front line of field archaeological excavations, and has participated in or presided over the excavation of important sites such as Chengdu Jinsha, Maoxian Yingpanshan, Chengdu Jiangnanguan Street Tang song Dynasty Neighborhood, Xinjin Baodun, Gui'an New District, Guizhou Gui'an New District, and other important sites. The Tang and Song Dynasty Neighborhood sites of Jiangnanguan Street, which participated in the excavation, were awarded the "2008 National Top Ten Archaeological New Discoveries", and the Guizhou Zhaoguo Cave Site co-chaired by the excavation was awarded the "2020 National Top Ten Archaeological New Discoveries". Comrade He Kunyu has published more than 100 reports and papers in magazines such as "Archaeology" and "Cultural Relics", and co-published many large-scale archaeological reports such as "Maoxian Yingpanshan Sarcophagus Burial Cemetery" and "Maoxian Yingpanshan Neolithic Ruins"; he has won the titles of "Advanced Individual in Cultural Work" and "Excellent Communist Party Member" of Chengdu Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Film and Tourism for many times; won the second prize of the 18th Outstanding Achievements in Social Sciences in Sichuan Province, and the third prize of the 10th and 11th Outstanding Achievements in Social Sciences in Chengdu.
Comrade He Kunyu is also the founder of the Animal Archaeology Laboratory of the Chengdu Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. He systematically sorted out the remains of animal skeletons excavated from many sites in Southwest China such as Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, Guizhou and other southwest regions, and made outstanding contributions to the development and growth of zooarchaeology in Southwest China, and was also invited by Washington University in St. Louis to visit the American Archaeological Center and participate in excavation training.
