The Baodun site is located in Baodun Town, Xinjin District, Chengdu, spanning Baodun Village, Shuangshi Village and Longma Village. Dating from about 4500-4200 years ago, the site is the earliest and largest prehistoric city site discovered in the Chengdu Plain. The site covers an area of about 2.76 million square meters, which is one of the largest neolithic sites found in the late Neolithic period with both internal and external walls.
The archaeological discoveries at the Baodun site were rated as one of the top ten archaeological discoveries in the country in 1996. On June 25, 2001, the ruins of Baodun Ancient City were announced by the State Council as the fifth batch of national key cultural relics protection units. As the birthplace of rice cultivation civilization and the origin of urban civilization in Chengdu Plain, Baodun Site is a historical witness of Chengdu Plain entering the threshold of civilization, and an important evidence for the study of the history of ancient Shu civilization and Chinese civilization, and is known as "the light of Chinese civilization and the source of civilization in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River".
