The story of the cover design of "Into the New China Water Conservancy Journal"

Since the founding of New China more than 70 years ago, the water conservancy undertakings in various river basins and regions across the country have made ups and downs and made brilliant achievements. Many domestic publishing houses have published books on water conservancy, which is difficult to count. However, at present, whether it is in the China Water Conservancy and Hydropower Publishing House or in other relevant publishing houses, it seems that not a single book on the new Chinese water conservancy journal has been seen for many years.

The story of the cover design of "Into the New China Water Conservancy Journal"

Feeling this shortcoming, the author suggested that in the autumn of the previous year, the China Water Conservancy and Hydropower Publishing and Media Group, which had just been established for more than a year, together with the Journal Working Committee of the China Hydraulic Society, carried out the collection of relevant story materials, pictures, audio and video materials of the New China Water Conservancy Journal. This collection activity, even if it is not easy to say that it is the first since the founding of New China, can certainly be said to be the first time in the past two or three decades. Because I have worked in the water conservancy system for nearly 30 years, I have never heard of any unit inside the water conservancy system or outside the water conservancy system that has carried out this work. At that time, I and my colleagues also felt that there was no certainty about how much story information could be collected and whether a book could be published.

At the beginning of the collection, although there were many difficulties, colleagues of the unit and many colleagues inside and outside the water conservancy system gave enthusiastic support to this activity and placed sincere hopes and expectations on it. It is generally believed that the development and changes of new Chinese water conservancy journals are themselves a rich and colorful history. With the development and changes of water conservancy undertakings and economic and social development, water conservancy journals have also experienced a process from less to more, from weak to strong, ups and downs, rebirth, from internal to open, from domestic to international. In the past 70 years, many things have happened in the field of water conservancy journals that are considerable, memorable, memorable, learnable and passable. If we do not excavate, sort out and record the historical process of water conservancy journals now, then some important events, important changes and important nodes that have occurred in water conservancy journals in the past few decades are likely to be interrupted and disappeared from people's cognitive fields, which will directly affect our understanding and inheritance of the history and culture of water conservancy journals. After more than a year of collection work, a large number of written materials and pictures have been collected into the author's unit. In the process of compiling these materials, the working group members strongly felt that on the basis of these materials, editing and publishing a storybook on the new Chinese water conservancy journal was not only important and necessary, but also possible and feasible. After repeated deliberation by several colleagues, the title of the book was formulated as "Into the New China Water Conservancy Journal".

After the integration of text and picture materials is basically in place, the cover design of the book "Into the New China Water Conservancy Journal" has become a more interesting work.

At first, when the responsible editor solicited the opinion of the cover design, the author felt that the cover of the book should more clearly reflect the dual characteristics of the water conservancy industry and professional journals, and suggested that the covers of several water conservancy journals could be placed on the cover of the book, so that readers could see at a glance that the book was about the journal.

Following this line of thinking, the editor quickly designed three schemes to choose from. Among the three schemes, the two deputy editors-in-chief of the business are more inclined to choose the scheme of presenting a variety of water conservancy journals in the shape of waves and water droplets, and think that this scheme is more creative, which can reflect both the characteristics of water and the characteristics of the journal.

However, this scheme also has disadvantages, that is, the chinese and English titles are arranged vertically. For the vertical arrangement of Chinese, the average person may be acceptable, but for the vertical arrangement of English, it is difficult for the average person to see it at a glance, and it is difficult to identify the English title if the book is not tilted or the book is crossed. In addition, the several water conservancy journals arranged in the ranking are also very arbitrary, which neither reflects the time context of the founding and development of water conservancy journals, nor reflects the academic status and international influence of contemporary Chinese water conservancy journals.

Therefore, the author revised and optimized the cover plan that everyone was relatively satisfied with.

First of all, from the overall composition of the cover, the cover is divided into two areas, the upper and lower areas are arranged in Chinese and English book title text, and the lower half is arranged with pattern modeling.

Secondly, in the arrangement of Chinese and English titles in the upper half of the district, they have been changed to the horizontal way in which everyone is more accustomed to reading, and the use of Chinese and English characters has been appropriately artistically treated. That is, with a faint red heart-shaped pattern, centered, the Chinese and English are linked together, and the i letter in the English title is appropriately enlarged and reddish, so that it and the word "walking" in the Chinese (using a strong sense of dynamic Fangzheng Dragon chant) are in the heart shape, so that readers can easily associate with "I move", "I move around", "I use my heart - I - in my heart - into - New China Water Conservancy Journal" and other imagery. The lowercase English letter i, can also be understood as "small me", the new Chinese water conservancy journals included in the book, including both water conservancy engineering journals, but also water resources, water environment, water treatment, water culture and other non-water conservancy engineering journals, carrying the "big water conservancy", therefore, you can also echo the Chinese and English in the upper half of the district to understand, that is, "small me into the big water conservancy".

Third, optimize the layout of periodicals in the pattern area. The bottom of the water drop begins with the inaugural issue of New Yellow River, which was announced on October 1, 1949, and New Yellow River was founded on November 1, 1949, symbolizing the starting point of the development of new Chinese periodicals. Extending to the left and upward, in order, the "People's Water Conservancy" founded in August 1950, that is, the later "China Water Conservancy", the "Water Conservancy Translation Series" founded in January 1956, the "Water Conservancy Journal", which was launched at the end of the same year, and the English journal "International Sediment Research", which was later launched, the Chinese journal "China Flood Control and Drought Control", and the newly founded English journal "International Soil and Water Conservation Research" in recent years. "Hydropower" and "China Water Conservancy" slightly above the bottom of the water drop represent not only the two water conservancy journals, but also the century-long dispute between Li Rui and Lin Yishan on the construction of the Three Dragons Project, which began in 1956. In the middle of the pattern is the 16th issue of the 1959 issue of farmland water conservancy magazine, the cover of which is an oil painting depicting the scene of Mao Zedong, the founding leader of the People's Republic of China, with the masses of the people at a water conservancy site. Placing this issue of the journal in the middle of the pattern is also of great commemorative significance and symbolic significance, one is to commemorate the founding leader of new China, the other is to reflect that our party has always attached great importance to agriculture and water conservancy, and the third is to reflect the "people-centered" development ideology that we emphasize. Judging from the historical connotation and water conservancy work carried by the covers of these journals, it can be described as "the light of dripping water reflects Qiankun".

Also, the cover background color in the original design is light yellow, which is a bit of a chromatic color with the book title text color and pattern modeling color, in order to improve the contrast and clarity, but also in order to better reflect the characteristics of the water conservancy industry, it was changed to white, and the book title color was changed to sky blue Chinese.

The story of the cover design of "Into the New China Water Conservancy Journal"

After several modifications and adjustments, it can be seen that this cover has a red heart in the main background and main theme of the blue characters on a white background, and through the big words "New China Water Conservancy Journal", it keeps dripping water, and the water that continues to drip out is both hard work and sweat, and it has become a number of water conservancy journals. And these journals, individually look like waves, like water droplets, locally look like a meandering river of periodicals, the corner of the bay that holds on one side, causing people to think endlessly.

And this water droplet, as a whole, looks like a multi-faceted aquamarine full of water conservancy light, history light, people's light, and development light, which is shining a multicolored light between heaven and earth and the vast number of readers and authors. (Lee Chung-feng)
