Fight back, Canada's Arrow electric car will be larger than the Tesla Model Y

The all-electric Project Arrow SUV is taking shape in Canada, and the current plan is for it to cost between $40,000 and $60,000 and produce up to 60,000 units a year.

The vehicle was launched by the Canadian Auto Parts Manufacturers Association (APMA), which represents 90% of all independent auto parts manufacturers in the country. More than 400 companies have expressed interest in participating in the project, and according to APMA CTO Fraser Dunn, the association has begun working with dozens of companies on work statements and supplier agreements.

In an interview with Automotive News, Dunn revealed that the project Arrow will be somewhere between the Tesla Model Y and Model X. The vehicle will also consist of eight giant stamped parts welded together with lasers. Inspired by the Tesla Model Y, it will also feature magnesium alloy castings for the front and rear frames.

Most of the batteries for other electric vehicles in the market come from Asian suppliers, and Project Arrow's batteries will feature cylindrical batteries from VoltaXplore, a joint venture between Martinrea International and Montreal Graphene Company NanoXplore Inc. It will also adopt ontario Tech and its Automotive Center of Excellence in Oshawa.

Dunn added that the engineers behind Project Arrow are also targeting at least Level 3 autonomous driving. He also revealed that it will have a relatively simple design that does not have the redundant components used by most modern electric vehicles. APMA plans to launch a driveable prototype next December and may show it to the world at CES 2023.
