Good architecture is not for curiosity
It's about revisiting our cities
Yesterday, MISS's top ten ugly buildings in China were finally revealed.
Unexpectedly, the Jiuhuangshan Glass Bridge, which was the first in the previous online vote, did not make the list. You know, the other buildings on the shortlist at that time were more or less controversial. But the Nine Emperors Mountain Glass Bridge is different, for its ugliness, everyone is convinced, gave an unprecedented bad review.
Among the ugliest buildings of the year, there are two hotels on the list. But instead of the Manzhouli Matryoshka Hotel, which had previously placed high hopes on MISS, it was replaced by the Grand Metropark Hotel Beijing and the Langham Place Hotel in Changsha, Hunan, ranking fourth and eighth respectively, becoming a pair of difficult brothers and sisters.
After reading the entire list, MISS does not fully agree. For example, the second-ranked Suzhou Bay Cultural Center is not ugly from the appearance alone, and if it is designed and interpreted, it can even be said to be beautiful.

Hainan Danzhou Hengda Flower Island Complex
Reasons for being on the list: Capital is willful and arbitrary, destroys the marine ecology, and has a strange and chaotic form, which is a typical example of the project of showing off wealth and kitsch cultural tourism.
There is nothing too much of a problem with the appearance of the Haihua Island complex itself, but the world's largest artificial island, which claims to spend 160 billion yuan, has been stopped several times because of reclamation problems.
Over the years, Sea Flower Island has almost been in a cycle of illegal construction, suspension of work, fines and continued illegal construction, and such unscrupulous ecological damage should indeed be blamed.
Just earlier this month, hilton Haihua Island has also been grandly opened, with a construction area of 57,000 square meters, which is a landmark building into the island.

Jiangsu Suzhou Bay Cultural Center
Reason for the list: The concept of streamers is attached to the non-functional super-scale form, and the shape is exaggerated and wasteful, which is a representative work of fake large space design.
Suzhou Bay Cultural Center on the list, and ranked second is not easy for MISS to agree with.
The longest steel structure streamer in China has set a national first in terms of span and length, and has set up pedestrian paths on the streamer, which is not just a non-functional decoration.

Shandong Jinan Hongyang Square
Reason for the list: The boring single skin covers a variety of functions and super-large-scale building volumes, endangering the urban visual environment.

Grand Metropark Hotel Beijing
Reasons for the list: The renovation of the building failed to correct the original design defects, and the more it was changed, the uglier it became, and the image of the city at the east gate of the capital was damaged.
The Grand Metropark Beijing, which opened in 2016, has just undergone a re-renovation to reach fourth place in the list, which is also lamentable.
Once known as the flagship store of Metropark International, the high-end brand of CTS, the unique multi-prismatic façade has been widely known as a landmark building of Sanyuan Bridge.
As a regular hotel, it may not be too much of a problem. The mistake is that he not only bears the name of the flagship store, but also occupies a good position, which can be described as mediocre and very conspicuous.

Jilin Changchun FAW Hongqi Innovation Building
Reason for the list: The overall design idea is based on the pictographic formalistic routine, and the design vocabulary conflicts with itself, affecting the "innovative" image of the enterprise.

Guangzhou Alibaba South China Operation Center
Reason for the list: illogical mass cutting, rough technique, improper proportions, self-defeating.

Shanghai Songjiang G60 Kechuang Cloud Gallery
Reason for the list: Blindly pursuing urban wonders with false and wasteful exaggerations to cover up the mediocre design of the main body of the building.
The G60 Gallery is also a surprise to MISS, with designer Raphael Venori famous in contemporary architecture and his work is iconic all over the world.
His work was voted "one of the most important works defining architecture of our time" by the 125th Anniversary of architectural record magazine and won the Royal Institute of Architects Award.
This time on the list, I don't know how the architect himself should feel.

Langham Place Changsha, Hunan
Reasons for the list: deliberately seeking blame, acting in a hesitant manner, increasing costs in vain, which is both unreasonable and unsightly.
The Langham Place Changsha Dawangshan Hotel, which only opened this year, is really a bit unjust.
Designed by renowned architect Wolf D. Prix, the hotel is located in the heart of Xiangjiang Happy City. From the appearance alone, there is not much to be picky about, and the only disadvantage may be that it is somewhat out of place with the surrounding environment.
The hotel's 295 rooms and suites maintain The Langham's standards, with spacious spaces and large floor-to-ceiling windows.
Miss's friends stayed at this Langham and spoke well of the service and overall facilities.

China Science and Technology Architecture Museum in Wuhan, Hubei Province
Reason for the list: The design imitates the shape of the "seed" in a pictographic way, which is far-fetched and deviates from the expression of the theme of contemporary building technology.

Changqing Road in Puyang, Henan, crosses the Jindi River Bridge
Reasons for the list: the form is vulgar, the technique is clumsy, and the painting is full of snakes, which is contrary to the basic logic and aesthetic spirit of modern bridge structure.

Professor-level senior architect of the Architectural Society of China and famous architectural critic Gu Mengchao
Bu Zhengwei, the main founder and senior chief architect of China Housing Group Architectural Design Office (Comprehensive Grade A).
Zhou Rong, associate professor at the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University and a well-known architectural critic
Cao Xiaoxin, deputy chief architect of China Architectural Design and Research Institute and host of Daqi Architecture Studio
Wang Yonggang, researcher at the Public Art Institute of the National Academy of Painting of China
Che Fei, founder and host architect of Chaocheng Architectural Design Office
The annual ugly building selection is not a carnival that exists for the sake of curiosity. Instead, revisit our cities and make there are fewer and fewer ugly buildings.
