During the Liberation War, General Liu Changyi served as the deputy commander of the Third Column of the Central Plains Field Army (later the commander of the 15th Army), and was an old subordinate of Liu Deng. Among the generals of our army, Liu Changyi was a well-known tiger general who could fight, had a big temper and suffered many injuries, and was awarded the rank of founding lieutenant general in 1955. General Liu Changyi's chin and lips look unnatural because he suffered a serious gunshot wound in 1946, and his cheeks and chin were pierced by enemy bullets, and although they were surgically treated, they still left obvious scars, which is actually a hero's totem.
Liu Changyi was wounded a lot during the war years, with bullet holes in his head, chest, legs, and abdomen, and in his later years, when doctors examined his body, he was shocked and could not close his mouth: Although it is common for a general to be injured, a senior general like Liu Changyi has so many wounds on his body, some of which are even fatal, so it is indeed rare. During the Long March, Liu Changyi was injured and fainted, and his subordinates thought that he had died and once wanted to bury him, but after lying in a coffin for half a day, he suddenly woke up. After more than a month of wounding, he re-entered the battle and was known as "Fierce Zhang Fei" from then on. Not only was he brave in battle, his temper was also very similar to Zhang Fei, and he was the most popular among the later Erye generals. When he was in his seventies, someone wanted to help the old general to walk, but he was pushed away and shouted angrily: If the soldiers can't even walk, what battle will they fight? Give me away!
In the Battle of Huaihai at the end of 1948, the Central Plains Field Army undertook the heavy responsibility of the double-stacked encirclement and annihilation battle, and the third column was also one of the main forces to attack the stronghold, because of the rudimentary weapons, the overall casualties of Nakano were very large, and finally under the strong support of the East China Field Army, it struggled to eat the powerful opponent Huang Wei Corps. But Liu Changyi's third column suffered thousands of casualties, and although the battle objectives were achieved, the general was still heartbroken.
After the victory in this battle, the General Front Committee specially set up a celebration banquet, and cadres at and above the regimental level attended the meeting. The old political commissar of the Central Plains Field Army came down from the main table during the banquet and gave a toast to the commanders of the lower-level columns, and when he arrived at Liu Changyi's place, the political commissar said: The three columns fought particularly bravely, destroyed many enemies, and ate a lot of meat! This was originally a joke by the political commissar of the field army, which meant that the officers and men of the three columns could eat and fight well. However, Liu Changyi, because he had drunk a lot of wine that day, did not understand the leader's meaning for a while, and remembered the large number of officers and men who were killed and injured in the column, and felt very angry, and he directly lifted the table in front of him to the sky.
Without considering the special situation, this is obviously a phenomenon that belongs to the following crimes, which is an extremely rare phenomenon in the history of our army. Especially in the presence of not only Liu and Deng, but also senior cadres of Huaye such as General Manager Chen and Commander Su, Liu Changyi's influence in doing so was undoubtedly very bad. But the old political commissar knew that Liu Changyi had drunk wine, and he must not have heard his own words, so he did not say anything more and laughed at it. Later, when everyone pulled Liu Changyi away and explained it, he suddenly woke up drunk and suddenly realized that he had made a very serious mistake. Liu Changyi hurriedly walked over and apologized to the chief. The political commissar was very broad-minded: "Apologize, I know you've heard something wrong."
Although it was a misunderstanding, it was inevitable that there would be a knot in the hearts of ordinary people, and Liu Changyi had always remembered this matter since then. However, this kind of worry is not necessary, Liu Changyi is a good warrior tiger general, has always been the attention of the chief. More than 30 years later, in the counterattack against Vietnam, the old political commissar was already the chairman of the Central Military Commission, and the first few generals who came to mind before the war included his old subordinate Liu Changyi. In 1979, Liu Changyi served as the deputy commander of the Guangzhou Military Region, and General Xu Shiyou from Lao Sanye took command of the Eastern Front, and Liu Changyi was Xu Shiyou's deputy and the general personally ordered by the old political commissar. From this, it can be seen that Liu Changyi's position in the heart of the chief.
Under the command of several tiger generals, our army won a great victory in the counterattack against Vietnam. It is well known that Xu Shiyou's alcohol consumption is very large, and among the three generals, only Song Shilun can compare with him, but he cannot drink Liu Changyi, the deputy commander of Erye. At the celebration banquet after the counterattack against Vietnam, Liu Changyi and Xu Shiyou were drunk, and Xu Shiyou could not drink when he drank the third bottle of Maotai, but Liu Changyi still had combat effectiveness. In 1999, the 85-year-old general Liu Lao died of illness.
