Dou Bao, a chancellor of the Western Han Dynasty, was the nephew of Empress Dou. Dou Infant served as Marquis of Wei during the reign of Emperor Jing of Han and Chancellor of the Han Dynasty during the reign of Emperor Wu of Han.
Emperor Jingdi of Han once commented that Dou Infant had an arrogant personality, was reckless in doing things, and was difficult to take on heavy responsibilities. It is reasonable to say that Emperor Jing commented on Dou Baby in this way, and Dou Baby should not be a beggar.
During the han jing emperor period, Dou Bao did not serve as a chancellor, but why did he become a chancellor during the period of Emperor Wu of Han? Why did the Han Jing Emperor evaluate Dou Bao in this way? Dou Infant was very moralistic as a friend in the Tian Dou Dispute, but as a human subject, what performance of Dou Infant would make Emperor Han Jingdi so dissatisfied, in fact, it was closely related to his personality.
First, the character of dou baby
1. Speak up
When Emperor Jing of Han had just ascended the throne, Dou Infant served as Zhan Shi. Once, Emperor Jing of Han and Empress Dowager Dou held a banquet. This is said to be a banquet, rather than a family banquet, above which there are Han Jingdi, Empress Dou, Liang Wang, and Dou Bao, all of whom are blood relatives.
At the banquet, the Han Jing Emperor was drunk and said:
"After his death, he will pass the throne to the King of Liang!"
Empress Dowager Dou was very happy to hear this, but Dou Infant immediately objected: "The world is the world fought by Emperor Gaozu, and the throne should be passed on from father to son, this is the rule of the Han Dynasty, why should Your Majesty pass the throne to King Liang without authorization?" ”
Because of Dou Bao's opposition, Empress Dou hated him for this.

From this incident, it can be seen that Dou Bao is not afraid of things and dares to enter the counsel.
Analyze whether this sentence of Emperor Jingdi of Han is true, from the later establishment of Liu Che as the crown prince by Emperor Jingdi of Han, we can know that this sentence of Emperor Jingdi of Han is just a joke and is not taken seriously.
It may be to please Empress Dowager Dou, because Empress Dowager Dou has always loved the King of Liang the most, or it may be that she is drunk and unintentional.
In short, the Han Jing Emperor did not take this matter to heart. However, Geng's Dou Infant took it seriously, knowing that Empress Dou loved The King of Liang, and dared to refuse in front of Empress Dowager Dou, indicating that Dou Infant was an upright person.
2. Willfulness
In addition to daring to advise Dou Bao, he is also very willful.
After offending the empress dowager, Dou Bao disliked Zhan Shi's official position as too small, and directly resigned under the pretext of illness, so Empress Dou expelled him from the palace gate, and even if it was a festival, he was not allowed to enter the palace to meet him.
In the third year of The Han Jing Emperor, the Rebellion of the Seven Kingdoms of Wu and Chu broke out, and the Han Jing Emperor urgently needed talents to quell the rebellion, but no one in the court could match Dou Bao, so the Han Jing Emperor summoned Dou Baby.
If you want to say why Dou Baby is willful, just because of the last little thing to resign and go home, this time the country should always come forward. As the saying goes, the world rises and falls, and Dou Bao, as a courtier of the Han Dynasty, should contribute to the country. But how does Dou Baby do it?
Dou Infant entered the palace to meet the emperor, and on the pretext of being ill and incompetent, he resolutely resigned.
Or did the Han Jing Emperor blame him: "The world is in difficulty, how can you resign?" Empress Dowager Dou was also ashamed of what happened last time, and Dou Infant took up the post of Grand General.
After the rebellion of the Seven Kingdoms was put down, Dou Bao was given the title of Marquis of Wei Qi, with a high status and deep trust by the emperor, and the guests and travelers all rushed to be attached.
When Emperor Jing of Han was four years old, Dou Infant served as the prince Liu Rong's eunuch. After three years, Emperor Jing wanted to depose the crown prince, and Dou Bao resolutely opposed it, and argued with Emperor Jing many times, but Emperor Jing still did not listen to him or deposed the crown prince.
After the crown prince was deposed, Dou Bao resigned that he was ill and lived in seclusion under Nanshan in Lantian County for several months, and many guests and pennies came to persuade him, but he refused to go back.
Dou Infant offended Empress Dou last time because of the matter of King Liang, but fortunately, after the Rebellion of the Seven Kingdoms, Empress Dou changed her view of Dou Infant, and now because of the matter of the prince, she lives in seclusion, and others do not listen to what they say, which can be described as really willful.
Later, a Liangdi man, Gao Sui, persuaded Dou Bao: "It is the emperor who makes you rich, and it is the empress dowager who makes you a close confidant of the imperial court." Now you are arguing with the emperor about the abolition of the prince, and you have not succeeded, and you cannot be martyred in the line of duty, but just live in seclusion here. You do this as if you were accusing the Emperor of his faults, and if the Emperor is angry and wants to condemn him, then your wife and children will be killed. As soon as Dou Infant heard this, what he said made sense, so he went out of the mountain and returned to the dynasty, and went to see the emperor again as in the past.
Dou Bao's personality was really a bit willful, saying that if he didn't go to the upper dynasty, he wouldn't go to the upper court, and he wouldn't even give the emperor's face, and repeatedly pushed the emperor back. So what was the performance of Emperor Jing of Han after Dou Infant returned to the dynasty?
Emperor Jingdi of Han did not say anything or do anything to Dou Bao, but the fact that Emperor Jingdi of Han did not say it did not mean that he did not have an idea in his heart. Dou Bao was repeatedly willful, and Emperor Jingdi of Han was presumably not satisfied in his heart.
Moreover, the Han Jing Emperor, what he said and what he did were completely different things. Before the Han Jing Emperor said at the banquet that he wanted to establish the King of Liang as the emperor, the emperor's promise must be a promise of thousands of gold, but the Han Jing Emperor later established Liu Rong and Liu Che as the crown prince, and did not have the intention of making the King of Liang the emperor, so the real idea of the Han Jing Emperor was only buried in the heart.
What kind of attitude Emperor Jingdi had toward Dou Bao could be seen from his conversation with Empress Dou. When Liu She, the Marquis of Tao, was removed from the position of chancellor, Empress Dou repeatedly recommended Dou Bao as a chancellor.
Emperor Jingdi of Han said: "Wei Qihou is a person who is proud and complacent, easy to appreciate himself, sloppy and frivolous in his work, and difficult to assume the role of a minister. ”
After all, dou baby was not allowed to be the prime minister. From this sentence, it can be seen that although Emperor Jingdi of Han did not say anything to Dou Baby, he still had opinions in his heart, so he did not want Dou Baby to be a minister, and ordered Wei Huan to be a minister.
Dou Bao's two personalities first offended the Empress Dowager and then offended Emperor Jing. Although the empress dowager later changed her mind about Dou Baby, the power of the state was still in the hands of Emperor Jing of Han, and Emperor Jing of Han had opinions about Baby Dou, so it was difficult for Baby Dou to be a chancellor. So how did Dou Baby become a minister later? There are many reasons for this.
Two. Dou Baby became the reason for the beggar
1. Believe in Confucianism
When Emperor Wu of Han ascended the throne, Wei Xuan was dismissed from his post because of illness, and Emperor Wu of Han was thinking of arranging a new chancellor.
When Emperor Wu of Han first ascended the throne, Dong Zhongshu stood out because of his questioning of Xianliang Fangzheng and suggested "deposing hundreds of families and respecting Confucianism alone", while Dou Baozheng was admired by Emperor Wudi of Han because he loved Confucianism and was able to become a chancellor.
2. Field hopper recommended
Marquis Tian of Wu'an was still a Lang official when Dou Infant was a great general, and he could only treat Dou Infant with great respect. Because after her sister Lady Wang became empress, she slowly became noble. Tian Yue himself wanted to be the prime minister, but his guests told him that Wei Qihou had been noble for a long time, and the guests of the world were all attached to him, and you had just gained power, and you could not compare with Wei Qihou.
If the emperor asks you to be the prime minister, you must also resign and give it to Wei Qihou, so that you will become a lieutenant. The status of the lieutenant and the prime minister is equal, and you have a good reputation to give to the sages.
Therefore, Tian Yu recommended Dou Bao to Emperor Wu of Han as a chancellor.
Tian Yu did this for no more than two reasons,
First, if he left the position of Chancellor to Dou Bao, everyone would praise him for his reasoning, and Tian Yu's reputation would be good; second, Tian Feng recommended Dou Bao as a Chancellor because he wanted to be a lieutenant.
The status of tai wei and the chancellor is the same, the same honor, and recommending Dou Bao as a chancellor will not only leave a good reputation for himself, but also will not lose anything. It's a great idea to kill two birds with one stone.
3. Dou Baby is talented
The position of chancellor is extremely important, he is the emperor's right hand, and he needs people with both moral integrity and ability to hold it. During the reign of Emperor Wu of Han, let's see if there is any suitable candidate.
If the founding heroes of the Han Dynasty, such as Xiao He, Cao Shan, Chen Ping, Zhou Bo and others have long died, their descendants Cao Yao, Zhou Yafu, Liu She and others are also for a variety of reasons, or are no longer alive, or resigned and returned to their hometowns, so there were not too many talents during the Period of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, and the talent was basically lost.
Dou Bao was particularly important at this time, and during the Rebellion of the Seven Kingdoms, emperor Jingdi of Han saw his talent.
If it weren't for Dou Bao's own talent, Empress Dou wouldn't have bowed her head and softened, and Emperor Jing of Han wouldn't have invited him back. Dou Bao's quality is also very good, he will recommend Yuan Ang, Luan Bu and many other famous sages to the Han Jing Emperor, and have a heart of love.
Moreover, during the Rebellion of the Seven Kingdoms, Emperor Jingdi of Han rewarded Dou Infant with a thousand pounds of gold, which was a great fortune, but Dou Infant only placed this gold in the corridor hall, and if there was a need for subordinate officials, let them take it as appropriate, dou infant himself was useless.
When Dou Infant was living in seclusion at the foot of the South Mountain in Lantian County, there were many people who came to persuade him, indicating that Dou Baby's popularity was still relatively good. If Dou Bao was not friendly to the people around him, then there would not be so many people to persuade him at that time.
On the whole, although Dou Bao's personality is somewhat willful, his character is still excellent, and he can be described as a veritable sage.
Talented and sage, then Dou Bao was the perfect candidate for Emperor Wu of Han to choose a chancellor.
summary
Dou Bao was not favored during the Jing Emperor period, but when he became a chancellor during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, the process was also very tortuous. It can be said that Dou Bao's ups and downs in the official arena are inseparable from his personality. Because Dou Infant respected Confucianism, he was highly valued by Emperor Wu of Han, but it was also because of His respect for Confucianism that he was dismissed by Empress Dou from the post of Chancellor. Dou Infant helped Emperor Wu of Han develop Confucian scholarship with great fanfare, and was resented by Empress Dou, so that later the Tian Dou Dispute occurred at home, and Dou Infant died here.
