The Lee Jeong-do Institute was established at the instigation of the famous physicist Lee Jeong-do. In December 2014, Li Zhengdao wrote a letter to the central leadership, proposing to establish a world-class research institute in China with reference to the Bohr Institute, which has a huge impact on the development of world science, to attract a group of the world's top scientists, form an academic atmosphere of free exploration, train a group of top scientists belonging to China, and promote the major development of physics and its interdisciplinary research.

On November 30, 2016, under the care of party and state leaders, with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Shanghai Municipal Government, the Li Zhengdao Research Institute was established at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Among the first scientists to be introduced was the 2004 Nobel Laureate in Physics, Frank Wilczek. In September 2017, Frank Wilczek was appointed as the first director of the Lee Jeong-do Institute. On April 7, 2018, Li Zhengdao became the honorary director of the Li Zhengdao Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. On December 3, 2021, Zhang Jie, former president of Shanghai Jiaotong University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was officially appointed as the new director of the Li Zhengdao Research Institute.

Director Zhang Jie, who has just taken up his new post, said: "The Li Zhengdao Research Institute carries the high hopes of the party and state leaders. At this stage, the competition at the level of scientific research is largely a competition of the level of computing power. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Yang Yuanqing, an alumnus of the Class of '81, for his generous donations to Shanghai Jiaotong University, for the future development of the Li Zhengdao Research Institute, and for helping China's original innovation capabilities."

Lin Zhongqin, president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, also said, "The green water-cooled high-performance computer group that ranks first in the computing power of Chinese universities has landed in li zhengdao research institute, which is full of yuanqing xuechang's ambition of becoming a strong country in science and technology and serving the country in the industry, and also shows the vision of school and enterprise cooperation and creating first-class", "I hope that this time I will join hands with Lenovo Group to jointly promote the development of the industry and economy and society and achieve win-win cooperation.".

Help Shanghai Jiaotong University achieve the strongest "computing power" of Chinese universities

The Yang Yuanqing Scientific Computing Center of Shanghai Jiaotong University is located in the experimental building of the Li Zhengdao Research Institute in Zhangjiang Science City. The experimental building of Li Zhengdao Research Institute was officially opened on December 3, 2021, and has gathered a number of research teams led by academic masters, attracting a group of young talents with vitality in scientific and technological innovation, and carrying out original basic research in a number of cutting-edge fields around the research directions of particle and nuclear physics, astronomy and astrophysics, and quantum basic science, and the construction of experimental platforms is steadily advancing. And the scientific research in these fields is precisely the one that needs the support of high-performance computing the most.

As the world's no. 1 provider of high-performance computing solutions, Lenovo has topped the global high-performance computer TOP 500 list for eight consecutive times and topped the total share of China's HPC TOP 100 annual number seven times. Lenovo's warm water cooling technology has also become a model of green and low carbon in the industry.

"I think it would be perfect to give such a gift to my alma mater." Yang Yuanqing said in his speech.

At the unveiling ceremony, Tong Fuyao, senior vice president of Lenovo Group and president of Lenovo Enterprise Technology Group, introduced that "Siyuan No. 1" condenses the latest technological achievements and construction experience of Lenovo's green, low-carbon and high computing power, and at the same time reflects the global excellent technical level:

The total computing power of the "Siyuan-1" high-performance computer is 60 quadrillion times per second (double precision). In the list of the world's TOP500 high-performance computers released in November this year, the computing power of "Siyuan No. 1" ranked 132nd, surpassing that of International Famous Universities such as Harvard and Cambridge. In the list of China's top 100 high-performance computing, it ranks 12th, and Chinese universities rank first in high-performance computing.

In addition to the first computing power of Chinese universities, "Siyuan No. 1" also has three major technical characteristics: ultra-high computing density and power consumption density, green energy saving, and energy recyclability.

In terms of computing density, the computing density of "Siyuan No. 1" is 5 times that of the general data center, and the area of the required computer room is less than 1/10 of the general data center; in terms of green energy saving, the average PUE (energy utilization efficiency) of China's data center is 1.9, and the "Siyuan No. 1" adopts the fifth generation of warm water cooling technology, with a PUE value of 1.1, which can save 42% of electricity and carbon dioxide emissions compared with the traditional air-cooled cooling scheme; in terms of energy utilization, waste heat recovery technology is used, and waste heat generated during computer computing. It can be used for winter heating in the spherical hall of the institute, hot water heating in the canteen kitchen, dehumidification in the basement, and air conditioning temperature control in the laboratory, achieving an additional carbon offset of 950 tons per year.

Representatives of teachers and students from the Lee Jung-do Research Institute, the School of Physics and Astronomy, the School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering and the School of Life Science and Technology are full of expectations for the opening of the "Yang Yuanqing Scientific Computing Center", and they said that the improvement and leap of scientific research computing power will give researchers the opportunity to explore and try various new things, continue to fail and try again, and help accelerate the solution of the thorny problems facing all mankind, including climate change, epidemic threats, energy crises and so on.
