This year marks the 10th anniversary of the "Master Forum" of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. On April 8, 2022, the 126th anniversary of the founding of the university, Shanghai Jiao Tong University held the 10th anniversary of the "Master Forum" in a combination of offline and online. Lin Zhongqin, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered an opening speech for the event, Xu Xuemin, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and vice president, presided over the opening ceremony, and Lin Zhongqin and Xu Xuemin jointly unveiled the "Ten Years of Masters Looking Back" Cloud Film Festival. Professor Adam Riess, Nobel Laureate in Physics and Academician of the American Academy of Sciences, was invited to give a lecture on the theme of "The Wonderful History of Cosmic Inflation". More than 5,000 people participated in the activities online and listened to the master's academic reports.
At Jiaotong University, I turned around and met the master
Shanghai Jiao Tong University adheres to the promotion of "learning in Jiaotong University" and cultivates first-class talents with first-class culture. In April 2012, the school founded the "Master Forum", which regularly invites the world's top academic masters to enter the campus and discuss the way of scientific research with the students of Jiaotong University. With the theme of "those who study their essence, the way is deep; those who are broad in their knowledge, and those who are far away", the "Master Forum" has become a shining academic activity brand on the campus of Jiaotong University after ten years of spring and autumn, building a highland for academic exchanges between masters and teachers and students of Jiaotong University, and creating a "scientific temple" for Jiaotong University students to perceive the ideas of masters. Almost every lecture of the "Master Forum" was full, and the Q&A session was even more enthusiastic, and the students discussed the direction of life in the dialogue with the master and deeply rooted the feelings of family and country.
In the past ten years, the "Master Forum" has been successfully held for 168 sessions, and 163 guests have been invited to gather on the shore of Siyuan Lake to talk about the future of science. The first speaker of the forum was Mr. Wang Zhenyi, winner of the highest national science and technology award, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a well-known hematology expert at home and abroad. Among all 163 academic masters, there are 18 Nobel Laureates, 3 Fields Medal winners, 3 Turing Prize winners and 3 Wolf Prize winners; 72 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 74 academicians of foreign Academies of Sciences and Engineering Academies. In the past ten years, more than 100,000 teachers and students have participated in the "Master Forum" to talk and interact with academic masters, enlighten their minds, and share a wonderful academic feast.
Looking back on the past ten years, a series of activities have begun
On behalf of the school, Xu Xuemin first extended a warm welcome to the guests, teachers and students who participated in the event, and invited everyone to watch the promotional video for the 10th anniversary of the "Master Forum". Subsequently, Lin Zhongqin and Xu Xuemin unveiled the "Ten Years of Master Review" Cloud Film Festival. The cloud film festival is divided into twelve exhibition rooms according to the chronological order of "master forum", leading the audience to enjoy the visual feast of the master's style and relive the wonderful academic report with a multi-dimensional spatial perspective and rich content background.
Lin Zhongqin pointed out in his speech that after ten years of spring and autumn, the "Master Forum" has invited more than 160 guests to give keynote speeches, including dozens of Nobel Prize, Fields Medal, Turing Award, Wolf Prize winners and more than 100 well-known scholars at home and abroad, and their wisdom sharing has benefited more than 100,000 teachers and students participating in the "Master Forum" and benefited a lot. Lin Zhongqin encouraged jiaotong university students to "not reach the realm of the master, but have the ambition of the master", maintain the pursuit of truth, constantly broaden their horizons and patterns, and in the context of the era of "great changes that have not occurred in a hundred years", practice the purpose of the master forum of "applying what they have learned, and integrating knowledge with action", and strive to become the main force of the country's future scientific and technological talents.
In order to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the "Master Forum", Shanghai Jiao Tong University has held a series of academic activities since April 6 this year, in addition to the main activities on April 8, it will also hold academic sharing meetings for doctoral students of the "Zhiyuan Honor Program", "Academic Star" winners, and winners of "Youbo Papers" on April 6, April 13 and April 20, respectively, and will hold the Medical Engineering Cross Doctoral Forum and the International Graduate Student Forum on April 27 and May 4 respectively to provide students with an academic feast.
Listen to the report and talk to the Nobel Prize masters
Professor Adam Riess, Nobel laureate in physics and a member of the American Academy of Sciences, gave a report online titled "The Surprising Expansion History of the Universe." At the end of the 1990s, it was widely believed that the expansion of the universe was slowing down. But Professor Adam Riess' team demonstrated for the first time that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate by observing distant supernovae. This breakthrough helped the academic community start a new journey in cosmic research, and was named the "Breakthrough of the Year" by Science magazine in 1998. Professor Riess pointed out in the lecture that the origin and future fate of the universe can be better understood by studying dark energy. At present, we know very little about dark matter, and we hope that in the next decade we can further study dark energy through the launch of the "Space Telescope", and through such research, we can draw the causes of the accelerated expansion of the universe. In addition, he also shared the latest advances in recent space research, such as the newly retouched Hubble Space Telescope, the emerging measurement methods born in recent years, Hubble tension, etc., and the positive impact of these advances on subsequent observational research.
The event was wonderful and the response was enthusiastic, which opened the curtain for the follow-up series of activities for the 10th anniversary of the "Master Forum".
It is reported that the 10th anniversary of the "Master Forum" of Shanghai Jiao Tong University will also hold a series of academic sharing activities in April and May.
