During the Three Kingdoms period at the end of the Han Dynasty, a sandbar was formed north of the Yangtze River in Jiangyin, where Sun Quan, the king of Wu, herded horses, so it was called "Ma Dasha", and has been under the jurisdiction of Jiangyin ever since.
At the turn of the two Song Dynasties, Yue Fei led an army to resist Jin, and then retreated to Madaosha. In the process of retreating, a large number of refugees in the north retreated with Yue Fei, and after they came to Madaosha, they saw that the land was fertile and the water and grass were abundant, so they settled down here, and the population of Madaosha increased greatly.

In the seventh year of Ming Chenghua (1471 AD), Teng Zhao, the capital of Su Song, who was ordered by the imperial court to inspect Su Song, believed that Ma Dasha and Jiangyin were across the river, and it was very inconvenient to cross the river for official affairs, and that Ma Dasha was also the gateway to the river and sea to defend Wudi, so he asked the imperial court to separate Ma Dasha from Jiangyin and set up a separate county administration. After reading it, the Chenghua Emperor agreed, and in order to pray for Ma Dasha to henceforth the river Qinghai Yan, tranquility and peace, and gave the name Jingjiang.

Dissolution of Zhangjiagang
During the Ming Dynasty, many small sandbars such as purple slug sand, Hengdun sand, Guansi sand, banana sand, liu haisha and many other small sandbars appeared on the river surface of Changshu County, Jiangyin, and by the 17th century, they were connected into pieces, which were collectively called "Changyin Sand". By the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty (1796-1820), the territory east of Jiangyin Changshan on the south side of the Yangtze River formed three large sandbars of Nansha, Zhongsha and Beisha, and the boundary of Jiangsu Changshu jiangtu had been blurred, and the people of the two counties had reclaimed it here, and farmers in Haimen County on the north bank of the river who had come to reclaim the river had repeatedly erupted in armed struggles. Later, the capital of Jiangsu Province divided the two counties into the north of Shajinji Port.
In 1937, the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression broke out in an all-round way, Changshu Jiangyin fell one after another at the end of the year, Jiangyin folk anti-Japanese resistance surged up, and the jurisdiction of the Japanese puppet regime was limited to a few townships around Jiangyin City, and the areas bordering Jiangyin and Changshu were beyond the reach of the whip, which also provided the soil for the development of the anti-Japanese armed forces led by the Communist Party of China.
In February 1941, Jiangkang established the Shazhou County Government for the first time from the north side of Chengyang Road to yanjiang, with seven districts under it, covering Zhouzhuang Town and Chengdong Subdistrict in Jiangyin, leading the anti-Japanese struggle in this area. The anti-Japanese democratic government of Shazhou County was established here.

On November 25, 1961, the State Council approved the formation of a new urban shazhou county in the eastern part of Jiangyin and a part of the northwestern part of Changshu. Jiangyin demarcated Yangshe, Houcheng, Tangshi, Deji, Daxin, Zhongxing, Chenyang, Sigang, and Nansha, and the originally planned Gushan and Beiyi were retained.
On November 25, 1961, the State Council approved the establishment of Shazhou County between Changshu and Jiangyin. In January 1962, Changshu County divided 14 communes and state-owned Changyinsha Farm, including Sanxing, Leyu, Zhaofeng, Hexing, Donglai, Chenghang, Nanfeng, Tangqiao, Xizhang, Jinfeng, Luyuan, Fenghuang, Tianzhuang and Miaoqiao, and Jiangyin County divided 9 communes including Chenyang, Zhongxing, Daxin, Deji, Houcheng, Tangshu, Nansha, Sigang and Yangshe, formally established Shazhou County, and the county people's committee was located in Yangshe Town. In September 1986, with the approval of the State Council, Shazhou County was abolished and Zhangjiagang City was established.
