It is no exaggeration to say that the Battle of Tashan was the most tragic battle fought in the Liaoshen Campaign.

The blockade, which took place in mid-October 1948, was far more important than a local war. Its victory was not only related to the progress of the Liaoshen Campaign, but also affected the course of the subsequent Liberation War to a certain extent.

The hero of this war was Lieutenant General Wu Kehua.

Wu Kehua, born in 1913 in Yiyang County, Jiangxi Province, worked as an apprentice in a tofu shop in his early years due to his family's poverty.

In 1929, Fang Zhimin formed the First Independent Regiment of the Red Army in northeast Jiangxi, and Wu Kehua joined the Red Army. Two months later, he was recommended to study at the "Xinyang Military and Political School".

In July 1930, the army was expanded, and Wu Kehua was promoted to deputy platoon leader. A year later, he was promoted to special agent company commander, battalion commander, and regimental commander.

In October 1934, he accompanied the main force of the Central Red Army on the Long March. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Wu Kehua served as the leader of the second detachment of the Shandong Column of the Eighth Route Army.

In December 1939, Wu Kehua was appointed as the leader of the fifth detachment.

In September 1940, the fifth detachment was reorganized into the Fifth Brigade of the Shandong Column of the Eighth Route Army, with Wu Kehua as the brigade commander, and then repeatedly attacked the Japanese army's "sweeping" of the Lunan area.

After the "Anhui Incident" in 1941, the Shandong Column set up the Jiaodong Anti-Surrender Command, with Xu Shiyou as the commander and Wu Kehua as the deputy commander, commanding the troops to repeatedly crush the attacks of the diehard Zhao Baoyuan.

In March 1943, Wu Kehua was promoted to deputy commander of the Jiaodong Military Region.

In the autumn of 1948, the situation on the battlefield throughout the country underwent fundamental changes, the number of the People's Liberation Army was getting bigger and bigger, the area of the liberated areas was constantly expanding, while the Kuomintang army was fighting less and less, and the occupied areas were constantly shrinking.

In desperation, Chiang Kai-shek had to concentrate his forces to protect Shenyang, Changchun, Jinzhou and other 3 cities.

At this time, the time has come for a decisive battle in the northeast, and the conditions in the northeast are also ripe.

Considering the overall situation, the Central Military Commission decided to wipe out all the Kuomintang troops in the northeast and not allow them to enter the customs to increase the pressure in the guanxi.

To achieve this goal, the main force of the Northeast Field Army must go south, first hit the Beining Line, and the specific location will be selected in Jinzhou.

Lieutenant General Wu Kehua, who was in charge of guarding Tashan at that time. The geographical location of Tashan is very important, if it is lost, the Kuomintang troops can flood into Jinzhou in two or three hours, and the troops attacking Jinzhou will face a situation of internal and external attack.

Wu Kehua commanded the four columns to first pass through the Bac Ninh Railway, cut off the connection between Jinzhou and Yixian County, and then cooperate with the brother troops to attack Jinzhou and block the enemy reinforcements at Tashan.

In the bloody battle of six days and six nights, the four columns annihilated 6549 enemy troops and suffered more than 3,000 casualties, effectively guaranteeing the victory of the attack on Jinjin at the cost of blood.

After the Liaoshen Campaign, Wu Kehua led his troops south to participate in the Pingjin Campaign, the first battle cut off the Pingsui Railway, successfully surrounded Fu Zuoyi's Sixteenth Army in the Kangzhuang area, and annihilated more than 6,800 enemy troops.

Later, together with his brother troops, he besieged Peiping, forcing Fu Zuoyi to accept a peaceful reorganization.

In 1949, Wu Kehua's department was renamed the 41st Army of the People's Liberation Army and served as its commander. Subsequently, he led his army to participate in the Battle of Hengbao, and then advanced into Guangxi and liberated more than ten counties such as Guilin.

After the founding of New China, Wu Kehua again led his troops into Guangdong to suppress bandits, and it took only 8 hours to cross the sea to attack Nan'ao Island, annihilating more than 1,400 Kuomintang troops on the island and removing Chiang Kai-shek's "springboard."

In 1955, Wu Kehua was awarded the rank of lieutenant general.

Since 1963, the Central Military Commission has made frequent transfers of Wu Kehua.

Wherever there were difficulties and needed to strengthen leadership, Wu Kehua was transferred.

In those days, the artillery was in urgent need of a supervisor and training, so Wu Kehua went to the artillery as a commander.

In 1979, in order to strengthen the leadership of the Xinjiang Military Region, the Central Military Commission appointed Wu Kehua as the commander of the Xinjiang Military Region, and in 1980, he was transferred to the Guangzhou Military Region as the commander.

In addition, wu Kehua has previously served as commander of five military regions in the Hainan Military Region, the Jinan Military Region (deputy), and the Chengdu Military Region, which is extremely rare.

So why is there such an arrangement?

It turned out that the Central Military Commission was well aware that Wu Kehua regarded the orders of his superiors as his destiny, and whenever he encountered a difficult problem, he immediately sent him out to solve it; every time he was in danger, he never mentioned conditions, received orders, and moved from house to house, and always lived up to the heavy trust, did a good job, and was satisfied with his superiors, and others called him "assault commander." We can see how much affirmation is contained in this nickname.

In his later years, Wu Kehua looked back on the past and often mentioned his comrades who died in the war years.

As soon as he met with his old comrades-in-arms, he said: In the War of Liberation, our Forty-first Army had 1 division cadre, 10 regimental cadres, 34 battalion cadres, and 6,407 commanders and fighters of the company or above who died, especially more than 3,000 casualties in the Tashan Blockade Battle, and my life and honor were given to me.

On January 13, 1987, Wu Kehua died of illness, and according to his last words, his ashes were placed on Tashan and laid to rest with the martyrs.
