Mi Fang followed Liu Bei for 20 years, and had just become the "Taishou of Nan County", why did he betray Liu Bei and defect to Sun Quan

author:Bunshido

Mi Fang was a military general of Liu Bei's group in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, serving Liu Bei together with his brother Mi Zhu. From the time when Liu Bei was poor, he followed closely, and even married his own sister to Liu Bei, who was Lady Mi.

For a person with such a lineage and status, how could he betray Liu Bei and turn to Sun Quan when Liu Bei's clique was about to reach its peak? And also took a life for Mi Zhu.

Mi Fang, who is it?

According to historical records, the Mi family was a Donghai people, "ancestral goods, ten thousand people, and hundreds of millions of people", and was a large landlord at that time. There are two heads of the Mi family, namely Mi Zhu and Lu Fang, one in one article and one martial.

Mi Zhu first served as another driver for Xuzhou Mu Taoqian. After Liu Bei entered Xuzhou, the two brothers of the Mi family began to serve Liu Bei. Later, Cao Cao admired the wealth of the Mi family and promoted mi zhu mi fang brothers as officials, bai mi zhu as the taishou of Win County, and bai mi fang as Peng Chengxiang, both of whom abandoned him and followed Liu Bei wholeheartedly.

When Liu Bei was secretly attacked by Lü Bu and occupied Xuzhou, Mi Zhu not only took out all his family property to fund Liu Bei, but also revived Liu Bei's army. He also married his sister to Liu Bei as his wife. The Mi family's contribution to Liu Bei's cause is so great that it can be said that no one can compare. Therefore, after Liu Bei obtained Yizhou, Bai Mi Zhu was made the general of An Han, and Lu Fang was made the Taishou of Nan Commandery.

Mi Fang, why surrender?

In 219 AD, Guan Yu northernly attacked Xiangfan, when Mi Fang was serving as the Taishou Tun Bing Jiangling of Nan Commandery and Fu Shiren Tun Bing Public Security, and the two were responsible for providing military funds.

In the same year, the Wu general Lü Meng attacked Jingzhou, first Fu Shiren opened the door and surrendered, and then the Wu army took Fu Shiren to Jiangling City, asking Fu Shiren to persuade Mi Fang to surrender, and finally Mi Fang also surrendered. Soon after, Guan Yu was defeated, and after no way back, he was captured and killed.

As a result, later historians attributed Guan Yu's defeat to Maicheng to Mi Fang and Fu Shiren. It was because of their surrender and the unfavorable grain and grass that Guan Yu was captured and killed. The root cause, Wen Shijun thought that Mi Fang surrendered at that time for three reasons:

Mi Fang followed Liu Bei for 20 years, and had just become the "Taishou of Nan County", why did he betray Liu Bei and defect to Sun Quan

First, horizontal and vertical is death, it is better to surrender

Guan Yu was Liu Bei's second brother, and Mi Fang was Liu Bei's brother-in-law, and both of them had a certain connection with Liu Bei. When stationed in Jingzhou, Guan Yu's position was higher than that of Mi Fang, and Guan Yu was a proud and arrogant person, and the relationship with his colleagues was very unsociable, scolding and corporal punishment of soldiers at every turn, many people dared to be angry but displeased, and Mi Fang should be one of them.

Before Guan Yu went north to Xiangfan, he had to mobilize military resources from Nan Commandery, which was under the responsibility of Mi Fang at that time. Coincidentally, when Guan Yu was urging military funds, a fire inexplicably broke out in Nan County, burning a lot of military assets.

After Mi Fang reported it, Guan Yu was furious and said, "Come back and settle accounts with you again" and went on the expedition. It is conceivable that this must be Mi Fang's greed for a lot of military pay, and he could not cash in at the critical time, so he used a fire to destroy the evidence.

After Guan Yu left, Mi Fang was very scared. On the one hand, Guan Yu's disposition will certainly not let him go, even if he looks at Liu Bei's face will not kill him, but Liu Bei will not protect him in matters of military assets; on the other hand, Guan Yu was given the power of "false festivals" when Liu Bei was crowned king, which gave Guan Yu the right to cut first and play later. War or no war is to die, and surrender becomes the only option.

Second, Wu used counter-tactics to force surrender

The first person Wu jun persuaded to surrender was Fu Shiren, who was stationed at the public security. It is said that Lü Mengbing went to the public security, and Fu Shiren began to be a stronghold, and Lü Meng ordered Yu To come and persuade him to surrender, and Yu Feng said at that time, "You see, our army has come all the way here, but you have not received any news, indicating that our army must have treacherous spies among you, and that the official position is very high." And at this time, my army is suppressing the territory, but your reinforcements have not responded, what does it mean, you think carefully, you are alone in guarding the city, and when the time comes, the dead will be wiped out, why bother?"

The "inner response" here pointed to one person inside and out, that is, Mi Fang, because at that time, he could inform him in advance, and the only person who could support him was this person. This is recorded in the historical book Book of Wu.

And when it came to Mi Fang, Wu Jun's use of Fu Shiren to persuade him to surrender was a high move. Not to mention how many bad things Fu Shiren would say about Guan Yu, and a little frightened, it is estimated that Mi Fang was estimated to be weak-minded. What's more, at that time, there was no resistance from soldiers and horses in Nan County, no rescue outside, and most of his troops were transferred by Guan Yu, and there was very little grain and grass left to support the front line. In the case of eastern Wu's large army pressing the border, he simply did not have the ability to resist. There is only one way left to surrender.

Third, don't be reused, prove yourself

Before serving as the Taishou of Nan County, Mi Fang had always existed in Liu Bei's camp as the second brother of Mi Zhu, so he was basically a "second ancestor", although his status was not low, but he did not have the right to actually control his own destiny, and everything he did was decided by mi Zhu, who was his brother and parent.

Mi Fang was definitely uncomfortable at this point, so after he became the Taishou of Nan County, he began to do whatever he wanted, which also had the plot of embezzling military salaries. Some scholars believe that when the Wu army secretly attacked Jingzhou, he sent someone to quietly contact Mi Fang, which Wen Shijun did not examine and did not make a plan.

A person who has been suppressed for a long time must be more painful and most want to express himself and make a contribution. As a result, when Mi Fang was cornered, he also used the high-ranking official Houlu promised by Eastern Wu to surrender became his best choice.

In fact, after Mi Fang went to Eastern Wu, he was not reused, and he was often ridiculed by his colleagues, so I will not read it in detail here.
