Reminiscing about the days I worked with Mr. Huang Kun丨History of Science

In 1989, the Physics Department of the Institute of Semiconductors organized an autumn tour, and Huang Kun (second from right) and Tang Hui (first from left), Lin Meimei (second from left), and Zhu Bangfen (first from right) took photos in front of Wanshou Mountain and Kunming Lake.

From 1985 to 1990, when I was at the Institute of Semiconductor Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, I had the privilege of working in the same office as Mr. Huang Kun, which was a veritable eye-opening stage for me as a recent graduate. It was a three-person office, and Zhu Bangfen was in the same room. Sometimes Zhu Bangfen will travel or go abroad, but in my memory, Mr. Huang rarely goes out, so except for the time period when I was training outside, it can basically be said that I was taught by Mr. Huang Kun every day. The strange thing is that I never felt the tension and pressure of facing the "big guys". Every morning, a gentleman dressed in a very ordinary outfit and carrying a cloth pocket in his hand walked into the office with a smile and a smile, and often took the initiative to say hello.

Mr. Huang never assigned me tasks, but only offered me a variety of reference books and literature. At that time, there was no electronic version, it was all mimeographs or even manuscripts, or Mr. Huang used his amazing memory to tell me about journal authors and other information, and went to the library to borrow copies of books or journals. When encountering places that I can't understand, whenever I ask Mr. Huang for advice, Mr. Huang always explains with great patience and provides the original source. Sometimes, after everyone has been quietly reading the literature for a long time, Mr. Huang will take the initiative to ask some interesting questions and guide everyone to discuss. Occasionally during breaks, we will also talk about various topics, from reading the newspaper today, to which characters are the favorite in martial arts novels, etc., everyone is unrestrained.

I remember one day, I don't know why I encountered the volume problem of the cone, I blurted out that it is enough to divide the cylinder with the same height as the bottom by 3. Seeing my "quick" response, Mr. Huang asked me with great interest why I want to divide 3? After a while, I used my pen to introduce the 3 factor through the integral formula on the discussion board. Mr. Huang took over the stubble, did not use a pen, just used his hands to illustrate to me his thinking on the source of this factor from the geometric image, when I suddenly realized that I was surprised by Mr. Huang's superb spatial imagination and interest in the nature of things, Mr. Huang vividly concluded: "Haha, it seems that you are an algebraic figure, I am geometric." A sentence is like waking up the dreamer, so that I can clearly see what characteristics I have, and where the distance between myself and the physics master is essentially.

When I first came to the office to work with Mr. Huang, the first question I asked was what was the lattice constant of gallium arsenide. I understand that my husband knows my "strengths and weaknesses" in a few rounds, and helps me grow in the small things at work all the time.

At that time, through continuous discussion with colleagues who did experiments, Mr. Huang keenly felt that the exciton problem in semiconductor superlattices was very important, and there was still something that had not been clarified in theory. Mr. Huang took me to inspire me to continue to explore this problem in depth, when our first version of the calculation results were repeatedly verified that there was no problem, but it did not match the experimental results, Mr. Huang already felt that what was a more basic problem was at work, and he inspired me to change a calculation scheme and do some analysis from the perspective of symmetry. When the results of the second edition came out, even I almost understood that the problem was that the complex symmetry of the superlattice cavity sub-band had not been dealt with. We put down the work we have done for more than a year, and turned back to study the problem of the hollow sub-belt thoroughly. Because there has been some discussion of symmetry, this work has been done smoothly, and we have published this work in the Journal of Semiconductors. Although Mr. Huang personally did everything from coming up with ideas, discussing calculation plans and results, to revising the paper, and even the manuscript of the 4th edition was personally written by Mr. Huang on the manuscript paper word by word, Mr. Huang still insisted on making me the first author of this work. Including our subsequent collaborative work, including with other colleagues, Mr. Huang Kun has always adhered to a fair and humble scholarly demeanor.

The manuscript of the paper cooperated by Huang Kun and Tang Hui was personally written on the manuscript paper by Mr. Huang Kun word by word. The label in the upper right corner indicates that this is the "fourth draft"

I have learned a lot from hearing and witnessing Mr. Huang's work experience in the past few years. In particular, how to jump out of the small circle in front of the eyes and stand in a broader range to consider the problem, how to improve insight and physical intuition in the efforts of bit by bit, etc., are all gradually realized and lifelong learning under the influence of Mr. Huang Kun's example and subtle influence. On the occasion of the centenary of Mr. Huang Kun's birth, I would like to share some experiences, and I hope that Mr. Huang Kun's personality strength will be more widely disseminated in the education and edification of our descendants, so that his excellent learning style and outstanding character will be passed on for a long time!
