President of Shell: Believe in the tenacity of human nature in the bleak times of the world!

In every place I've seen, people are doing everything they can to keep society up and running.

Everywhere I've seen, people care for each other, help each other, and millions of acts of kindness happen every day.

I was also deeply impressed by Shell employees and partners. In this unprecedentedly difficult time, they all know exactly what the right thing to do. From the crew of the offshore platform to the average gas station employee to a team of 80 Chinese employees and contractors, they work every 12-hour shifts to ensure that everything moves forward properly, and this way of working has persisted for 40 days.

Zhang Yuan, Project Development Manager of Shell's China Retail Business from Wuhan, volunteered to support the transportation of materials at Wuhan Leishenshan Hospital to help the hospital in the epicenter of the outbreak run normally. This volunteer work forced him to stay away from his family and his newborn twin son. But even so, he chose to go backwards.

I was also touched by the tremendous efforts of Shell's technical team during the fight against the pandemic, doing everything they could to get more Shell employees to work from home. Globally, we have 70,000 people working online, from kitchen tables to bedrooms, wherever they can be their work area.

There is no doubt that their work is critical to the global fight against COVID-19.

Natural gas provides energy support to hospitals during the pandemic. Our chemical plants are also scrambling resources to help produce more isopropanol as quickly as possible. Hand sanitizers are used worldwide to control the spread of the virus, and isopropanol makes up about half of hand sanitizers. The fuel produced by Shell is also powering trucks, which transport food from warehouses to stores. It also powers ships that procure cargo from around the world to replenish inventory in warehouses.

I know shell employees and contractors are focused on this. I'm also proud of their tenacity. Shell is a large-scale global company, and these actions are happening every minute, in every country. Across the company, heads of markets in various countries are stepping up their decisions to better address local challenges.

Therefore, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who works for Shell. I also want to say to them: keep going.

The discipline and discipline they demonstrated during the pandemic, including hand cleaning and social distancing, have led to a very small number of employees and partners contracting COVID-19. Therefore, it is necessary for us to continue to comply with the relevant guidelines. During the fight against the epidemic, the composure and calmness shown by people has enabled Shell to continue to produce the products that the world desperately needs today. We have to stay calm. The resilience of the company has brought us to where we are today, and we will continue to do so every day to come. As the world has shown, perseverance can help us out of a crisis.

It is true that this is an unprecedented crisis, but we, all of us, will eventually overcome it.

Especially if everyone can maintain the spirit that is being displayed in the moment – the same spirit that I see at Shell. It is this spirit that has enabled us to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and face more challenges ahead.
