Straits Observation丨Divist from the Democratic Progressive Party: Taiwanese Cannot Condone Lee Teng-hui's "Pro-Japanese View of History"

Since his visit to Japan in July, Lee Teng-hui has continuously made pro-Japanese remarks, first saying that Diaoyutai belongs to Japan, and then questioning the "fundamental deviation from the facts" held by the Malaysian government to commemorate the "70 years of victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan." He said: "70 years ago, Taiwan and Japan were the same country, and since they are the same country, the so-called Taiwan War of Resistance against Japan is certainly not a fact." He also said: "At that time, the two brothers fought as genuine 'Japanese' in the motherland."

Straits Observation丨Divist from the Democratic Progressive Party: Taiwanese Cannot Condone Lee Teng-hui's "Pro-Japanese View of History"

In response to Lee Teng-hui's absurd remarks, Guo Zhengliang, former "legislator" of the Democratic Progressive Party and vice chairman of the Formosa Boulevard Electronics Newspaper, published an article sternly saying that at the crucial moment when former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama knelt down at the rookie anti-Japanese monument and expressed his heartfelt apology for Japan's colonial rule over Korea, Lee Teng-hui, who had been the leader of the Taiwan region for 12 years, deliberately cooperated with the Japanese political circles and uttered pro-Japanese remarks that were partial and comprehensive, so that Taiwan would become an international laughingstock.

The Taiwanese volunteered to join the Japanese army?

Guo Zhengliang said that Lee Teng-hui voluntarily joined the Japanese army during World War II, but his "Japanese identity experience" did not represent the mainstream values of most Taiwanese at that time. Taking 1943 as an example, Taiwan's total population was 6.59 million, including 80,000 Taiwanese who voluntarily and were forced to join the Japanese army to participate in the war, and 120,000 "military dependents" and "military men", a total of 200,000 people, accounting for only 3% of Taiwan's total population in 1943. Although the Service of Japanese Soldiers and Japanese Soldiers was the same, Taiwanese Soldiers could not get compensation from the Japanese Government after the war, until 1977, through the continuous petitions of five Taiwanese civil organizations, the Japanese Government reluctantly paid compensation in 1995, but it was only calculated at 120 times the amount unpaid in that year, and each Taiwanese Japanese soldier received only 2 million Yen, and the compensation was calculated at 7000 times with Japanese soldiers, a difference of up to 58%. 3 times! Guo Zhengliang said: What is shameful is that the Lee Teng-hui family, which has never resisted Japan's colonial oppression and has never participated in Taiwan's autonomy reform, has falsified Taiwan's modern history with the "Imperial Japanese" view of history and comprehensively erased Taiwan's anti-Japanese history. During his tenure as leader of the Taiwan authorities, Lee Teng-hui, who prides himself on "fighting for the motherland as a genuine 'Japanese,'" never uttered a single fair word about the unfair treatment suffered by "Japanese soldiers of Taiwan nationality." This mentality of "pro-Japanese high-ranking Taiwanese" who "will only please the Japanese elite" is the true essence of Lee Teng-hui, the "Imperial Citizen of Japan."

Taiwanese "Japanese name"

In September 1936, Japan fully promoted the "Imperial Nationalization Movement" in Taiwan, and in 1940 promulgated the "Outline for promoting the change of Japanese names for Taiwanese nationals". Guo Zhengliang said: Lee Teng-hui's father, Lee Jin-yong, was a Japanese criminal policeman, and in order to declare his allegiance to the Japanese colonial government, he changed Lee Teng-hui's name to "Masao Iwasato." This shows the determination of the Lee family to change into the Japanese imperial people. Until December 1943, there were still not many Taiwanese people changing their Names to Japanese names, according to statistics, only 17,526 households changed their names, and the total number of people was only 126,211, less than 2% of the total population. He pointed out that Lee Teng-hui can only represent, at best, the historical outlook of a small number of "Japanese imperials of Taiwanese nationality," and the majority of Taiwanese are unwilling to change their japanese names to become imperial citizens, nor are they willing to join the Japanese army in the war. If we cannot understand the feelings and positions of the majority of Taiwanese people at that time from a more comprehensive perspective, we will obviously distort history by partializing the whole picture.

Taiwan's history of resisting Japan cannot be erased

Guo Zhengliang said: The anti-Japanese footprints of the Taiwanese people have spread throughout almost all the anti-Japanese areas on the mainland. In the Hong Kong battlefield, there were Xie Dongmin, Xie Nanguang, Li Wanju, Weng Junming, Liu Qiguang, Chen Zhesheng, and others; in the South China battlefield, there were Li Youbang, Xiao Daoying, Chung Haodong, Qiu Niantai, Guo Yaochuan, Yang Kunrong, and others; in the central China battlefield, there were also Wu Sihan, Zhu Tianshun, and others; and in the North China battlefield, Lin Siping, Yang Taishan, Yang Cheng, Li Zixiu, Lin Dong, Weng Adong, Yang Meihua, Chen Wenying, and others were thrown into the battlefield in North China. These people were Taiwan's leading elites from all walks of life at that time. In addition, in 1921, Jiang Weishui and others established the "Taiwan Cultural Association"; in 1927, Hong Yuanhuang, Peng Huaying, Xie Chunmu, Chen Fengyuan and others established the "Taiwan People's Party"; for example, in 1932, "Taiwan Minbao" became the largest Chinese newspaper calling for reform.

Are the Japanese really good for the Taiwanese? Guo Zhengliang: Taiwan was the "Island of the Police" at that time.

Guo Zhengliang said that according to the 1945 "Staff Directory of the Governor-General's Office of Taiwan", there were only 1 Taiwanese (0.6%) in the 161 consular (simplified) positions in the colonial government, only 29 Taiwanese (90.7%) in 2120 posts (recommended), and only 3726 Taiwanese (17%) in the 21198 appointments (appointments), most of whom were primary school teachers, low-level clerks in the street and villages, and post-police officers, and had no political influence at all. In total, in the 50 years that Japan has ruled Taiwan, taiwanese have only appeared 2 section chiefs, 3 county sheriffs, 3 judges, 9 middle school teachers, and 2 college professors, and no Taiwanese have ever entered the upper middle management class. In addition, the density of Police distribution in Taiwan in Japan is much higher than in Japan or North Korea. In Japan, the average number of police officers is 1228, compared with 919 in North Korea and 547 in Taiwan. North Korea has only 1.3 police officers per square kilometer, but Taiwan has as many as 3.1 policemen, and with the armor protection organization at the grassroots level, Taiwan was basically an island of police during the Japanese colonial rule. Taiwan and South Korea contradict each other's view of "Japanese occupation" history Guo Zhengliang also compared korea at that time, Taiwan was colonized by Japan for 50 years, Korea was also colonized by Japan for 35 years, and in 1937, Japan also promoted the Japanese Chinese movement in Korea. But the post-war Koreans' bitter review of Japanese colonialism has made the Taiwanese ashamed. In a 2014 survey of the attitudes of people in Asian countries toward Japan by the PEW Research Center in the United States, South Koreans had a negative attitude toward Japan as high as 77%, ranking second in the world, which was a strong contrast with Taiwan's one-sided pro-Japan. Although the fierce war between the Soviet Union and Japan led to the casualties of the Korean people, the Koreans believe that this is a necessary evil to overthrow Japanese colonial rule and pursue the liberation of Korea, and it is impossible to say the absurd remark that "70 years ago, Korea and Japan were the same country, and the so-called Korean War of Resistance against Japan is certainly not a fact"! Although there were 100,000 Korean Japanese soldiers in that year, and there were far more Koreans than Taiwanese who changed their Japanese names, no Korean would ever defend themselves with the attitude of "this is a historical fact", let alone be proud of "being a Japanese imperial citizen in those years"!

Lee Teng-hui is a pawn of Japan

Guo Zhengliang said: From 22 July when Lee Teng-hui was invited to give a speech at the Japanese Parliamentary Assembly Hall, to the secret meeting between Prime Minister Abe and Lee Teng-hui, to the news on 21 August that Lee Teng-hui would publish a special article by a Japanese right-wing magazine, it can be seen that the Japanese political circles deliberately chose to join the calendar on September 3 before the mainland held the "70th Anniversary of the Victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression" in an attempt to attack the "shield of commemoration of the cross-strait War of Resistance" through the "spear of Lee Teng-hui in Taiwan." In this regard, Lee Teng-hui was suddenly touted intensively by the Japanese political circles, but in fact he was only used as a chess piece for Japan to play against China, to offset China's "70th anniversary of the victory of the War of Resistance" against Japan's mountain rain. The most ironic thing is that at the crucial moment when former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama knelt down at the Monument to the South Korean Anti-Japanese Figures and expressed his heartfelt apology for Japan's colonial rule over Korea, Lee Teng-hui, who had been the leader of the Taiwan region for 12 years, deliberately cooperated with the Japanese political circles and made pro-Japanese remarks that made Taiwan an international laughingstock and were completely partial. It is the real sadness of the Taiwan people that the Taiwan people are really sad about continuing to indulge Lee Teng-hui's "pro-Japanese view of history" in the light of the Asian countries' introspection and review of Japan's history and the world's enthusiastic discussions on the 70 th anniversary of the victory of the anti-fascist war, taiwan continues to be reduced to pro-Japanese orphans in Asia, and continues to condone Lee Teng-hui's "pro-Japanese view of history."
