Liu Yalou did not participate in the Nanchang Uprising and the Autumn Harvest Uprising, he became a soldier of the Red Army after the Xiaolan Rebellion in Wuping County, Western Fujian in 1929, and his first position was as the 1st Squad Leader of the 4th Detachment of the Red Army Guerrilla Force in Western Fujian. In December 1929, Liu Yalou was selected to study in the "Red School" (the Red 4 Army Military School) under the leadership of the former committee directly under his command, which was obviously regarded as a key training object by the organization.
After graduating from the "Red School", after strict selection, Liu Yalou became the commander of the 2nd Company of the 3rd Column 1st Battalion of the Red 12th Army in March 1930, promoted to battalion commander two months later, and then transferred to the Red 4th Army as the political commissar of the 35th Regiment of the 12th Division 5 months later, and then promoted to the political commissar of the division half a year later. During the Long March, he served as the political commissar of the 2nd Division of the 1st Army, the absolute main force of the Red 1 front, and later served as the commander of the division, and was the superior of famous generals such as Geng Biao, Yang Chengwu, and Huang Yongsheng.
Liu Yalou was promoted from squad leader to division political commissar in less than 3 years, and he was only 23 years old when he became a division-level cadre, and the speed of promotion was simply incredible. In the eyes of many people, Liu Yalou, who has not been to Jinggangshan, does not seem to be a "concubine", so what is his superiority that makes the organization value it so much?
In addition to the outstanding advantages of courage, courage and strategy, vigorous action, and meticulous thinking, Liu Yalou also has an advantage that most people in the Red Army contingent do not have -- culture.
At the beginning, Liu Yalou's adoptive father, Liu Dexiang, preferred to let his own son drop out of school to provide Liu Yalou (then called Liu Zhendong) to study, the reason was that he liked the child's "brain, reading can read out." Facts have proved that Liu Dexiang is indeed extraordinary, Liu Yalou is indeed very smart, not only finished primary school, but also entered the middle school with excellent results, and later returned to his hometown as a primary school teacher, which is a groundbreaking thing in the mountains of western Fujian.
In the ranks of the Red Army at that time, there were very few young people like Liu Yalou who could read and hyphenate. Therefore, most of the Red Army soldiers who had attended middle school were trained as political work cadres, such as Lai Chuanzhu, Zhang Aiping, Yang Chengwu, Yang Yong, and Wang Pingren, who had served as a division and regimental political commissar in the Red Army, and all of them had received secondary education.
Moreover, Liu Yalou maintained a strong learning ability throughout his life, and later learned Russian in half a year when he studied at the Frunze Military Academy in the Soviet Union, and his tenacity and desire to learn were far better than ordinary people.
People like this are destined not to be things in the pool, no matter what profession they are engaged in, they will achieve amazing results.
The reason why the Headquarters of the Eighth Route Army sent Liu Yalou, who served as the education chief of the Anti-Japanese Military and Political University, to study in the Soviet Union was that it was determined to train him into a composite senior command talent of our army. At the Frunze Military Academy, Liu Yalou received modern formal military education for the first time systematically and was exposed to the most advanced military technology of the time. By the end of September 1941, with the German army group approaching Moscow, the students of the Frunze Academy could no longer talk on paper, they had to go to the battlefield of flesh and blood. Due to the obstruction of the return route, all Chinese trainees were approved to remain in the Soviet Union to participate in the Great Patriotic War. Liu Yalou, alias Sasha, became a major staff officer in the organ of the Far East Military Region of the Soviet Army, worked in this position for two years, and later assumed the pseudonym "Wang Song" and participated in the war against Japan with the Far East Front.
In the 8-year study and practice career of the Soviet Army, Liu Yalou learned the real skills, which made him completely transform from a political work cadre into a military commander with the ability to command a large corps. When the Northeast Democratic Coalition Army was established, Luo Ronghuan, who was recuperating in Dalian, met Liu Yalou and immediately sent a joint telegram to the chairman with Lin Biao, recommending Liu Yalou as chief of staff of the Democratic Coalition Army.

After Liu Yalou took office, he set up a staff training team in Harbin and personally taught, and also personally translated the Russian version of the book "Regulations on the Operation of The Red Army Field Staff Officers" into a Chinese, published it and distributed it to the headquarters at and above the regimental level, so that the staff officers could study and study it in one book by hand. It can be said that in the attainment of modern military scholarship, Liu Yalou directly approached Liu Bocheng.
Among the major field armies, the regularization of our army in the northeast is generally recognized as being in the forefront, which is related to the relatively solid material foundation of the northeast and the construction of the regularized general staff. On this point, Lin Biao once said: One Liu Yalou, top my three chiefs of staff!

At the end of 1949, the People's Air Force was formed, and when discussing the selection of the commander, the chairman pointed out Liu Yalou, and no one raised any objections.
