Huang Kecheng was born on October 1, 1902 in Xiaqing Village, Santang Township, Yongxing County, Chenzhou City, Hunan Province. In 1925, at the age of 23, Huang Kecheng joined the Communist Party of China. After 1930, Huang Kecheng successively served as the political commissar of the regiment and division of the 5th Army of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army, the director of the Organization Department of the Political Department of the First Front Army and the General Political Department of the Red Army, the political commissar of the 344th Brigade of the 115th Division of the Eighth Route Army, and the commander and political commissar of the Northern Jiangsu Military Region.

After the founding of New China, Huang Kecheng served as secretary of the Hunan Provincial CPC Committee, commander of the Hunan Military Region, deputy chief of general staff of the People's Liberation Army and director of the General Logistics Department, vice minister of national defense and secretary general of the CPC Central Military Commission. In 1955, Huang Kecheng was awarded the rank of General. After 1956, Huang Kecheng also served as a member of the Eighth Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, a member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee, the chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and an adviser to the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China. On December 28, 1986, General Huang Kecheng died in Beijing at the age of 84 due to illness.

General Huang Kecheng's lifelong companion was Tang Dihua, a native of Wuhan, Hubei Province. In 1941, at the age of 23, Tang Dihua married General Huang Kecheng. After marriage, Tang Di had four children for General Huang Kecheng, namely the eldest daughter Huang Nan, the eldest son Huang Xi, the second son Huang Qing, and the second daughter Huang Mei.

He is now retired.

In 1989, Huang Mei completed her doctoral dissertation "The Evolution of Cinderella's Dream" (in English) under the guidance and help of professor GeorgeLevine and other teachers. Later, after Huang Mei returned to China, she introduced, commented on, and translated many Works of British and American literature.
