In the autumn of 1934, after the failure of the fifth anti-"encirclement and suppression" campaign of the Red Army in the Central Soviet Region, the Central Red Army decided to begin a strategic shift. At this time, several elderly comrades were considering whether to move with the large troops or stay in the base areas to work.
At this time, He Shuheng, who was already 58 years old, had also been thinking about this matter, and when he chatted with Dong Biwu, who was 10 years younger than himself, who was working in an organ together, he asked him: "If the main force of the Red Army is transferred, are you willing to stay here, or do you want to leave with the large troops?" ”
Dong Biwu said without the slightest hesitation: "If possible, I am still willing to follow the large troops."
He Shuheng asked Dong Biwu again: "I have prepared two pairs of sturdy straw shoes, are you prepared?" ”
"I only prepared a new pair, and the pair I wear on my feet is still half new," Dong Biwu said.

Not long after the two men talked, the troops began to move, and the Central Military Commission, taking into account the complicated situation in the process of transfer, some elderly comrades would be physically weak and unable to keep up with the large troops, so they decided to let some comrades stay behind and carry out guerrilla activities behind enemy lines and wait for the return of the main forces.
He Shuheng was left behind, and he was no longer suitable for long-distance travel when he was nearly a year old. Dong Biwu, who had been discussing together at the beginning, moved with the large troops as he wished, and the two people could only rely on each other to say goodbye, and neither of them knew whether there was a chance to see each other again this time.
After the red army's strategic transfer was successful, and Chiang Kai-shek's plan to eliminate the Red Army in one fell swoop was stillborn, Chiang Kai-shek, in order to vent his anger, implemented a scorched earth policy in Ruijin, allowing his troops to burn and loot at will, and even to prevent fire from burning Ruijin City. Some comrades who were too late to lurk were arrested, and He Shuheng and Qu Qiubai led a small group of people to hide in the depths of the mountains in advance and continue to negotiate with the enemy.
Because the gap between the enemy and us is too large, and the enemy is sprinkling a vast net everywhere, the guerrilla war is carried out very difficultly, and they can only hide everywhere, and there is no replenishment of weapons, ammunition, and food and materials.
In February 1935, He Shuheng led a group of people to a small town in Hangxian County, where he wanted to rest, but his whereabouts were revealed, and he was discovered by the local security regiment, and the two sides engaged in a fierce exchange of fire.
Since our numbers were too small, in order to prevent being surrounded by the enemy, we could only exchange fire and retreat at the same time. The enemy was in hot pursuit behind, and the number of people was increasing, and the gunfire became more and more intense. He Shuheng, who is nearly 60 years old, has been following the troops.
After a long period of avoidance, he did not get a good rest, which made He Shuheng feel physically weak. In order not to drag everyone down, he let the guard next to him, Deng Zi, return to himself with a shot, so as not to fall into the hands of the enemy when he fell behind.
Deng Zihui refused He Shuheng's request and wanted to escape behind his back. Seeing that Deng Zihui rejected himself, He Shuheng did not say anything more, and when he withdrew to the edge of the cliff, He Shuheng took advantage of everyone's lack of attention, jumped and jumped off the cliff. Deng Zihui and his party lay on the edge of the cliff and shouted for a while, but did not hear any response, and saw the pursuing soldiers behind them coming, and had no choice but to evacuate.
After the news of He Shuheng's sacrifice came out, everyone was sad. Many years later, after recalling He Shuheng, the poet Xiao San wrote: He Beard, Poor Xiucai, Iron Bone Zheng Zheng Ah...
Born in 1876 in the second year of Guangxu, He Shuheng, a poor family, has helped landlords herd cattle, cut grass and cut firewood since the age of seven to subsidize the family. But he often didn't have enough to eat, and he couldn't help but sigh and said to his father: "When, eating is as wanton as cattle eating grass."
After listening to his words, his father said to him very seriously: "When you grow up and do things like an ox, you will definitely eat enough", and it is precisely because of his father's words that He Shuheng always reflects the character and quality of cattle in his future career.
In 1902, He Shuheng obeyed his father's wishes and went to the county seat to take the imperial examination and passed the Xiucai examination. At this time, the entire Qing Dynasty was already on the verge of collapse, the entire Chinese people were not happy, and the people were miserable. He Shuheng was reluctant to take up the official position of the already corrupt Qing government, and while teaching to subsidize his family, he was exposed to new things and new ideas from the outside world.
In 1913, at the age of 37, He Shuheng was admitted to Hunan Normal University and became the oldest student at the school. At school, He Shuheng met Mao Zedong, and although the difference between the two people was 17 years old, it did not affect the two of them from becoming friends for many years. He Shuheng was often overwhelmed by Mao Zedong's insight and courage, and felt in his heart that "Mao Runzhi is a great figure."
In Mao Zedong's eyes, although He Shuheng loved to wear a long shirt and looked like an old and pedantic dress, he was completely devoid of pedantic atmosphere, emancipated in thought, and sincere. Mao Zedong even affectionately called him "He Beard".
Others described the friendship between the two of them: "What Mao Run plots, He HuZi tends to; what He Hu Zi breaks, what Mao Run praises."
The relationship between the two can be said to be very good, with common ideas and the same goals.
In 1920, Mao Zedong, He Shuheng and a group of revolutionaries who firmly believed in Marxism came together to become the early organization of the Communist Party of Changsha and actively developed the team, laying a solid foundation for the establishment of the Hunan Communist Party organization.
In June 1921, Mao Zedong and He Shuheng, as representatives of Changsha, received an invitation from Chen Duxiu to attend the National Congress, and the two hurriedly and secretly went to Shanghai.
A month later, a group of people with an average age of 28 held the first national congress of the Communist Party of China in Shanghai, and then moved to Nanhu, Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, to complete the meeting, injecting fresh blood into the already devastated land of China.
After the meeting, the two returned to Hunan and continued to struggle for the revolutionary cause. In 1927, after the Changsha Ma-Ri Incident, He Shuheng resolutely and resolutely went to Shanghai, which was shrouded in white terror, and worked with the masses in the fields during the day, and held cadre and mass discussions at night, collecting information while developing revolutionary forces.
In 1931, He Shuheng dressed up as a rich man from Shanghai and traveled all the way through Hong Kong, Guangdong, and western Fujian to Ruijin in the Central Soviet District. He served here as a people's commissar of the Workers' and Peasants' Procuratorate of the Provisional Central Government of the Chinese Soviet, and as the presiding judge of the Provisional Supreme Court. He Shuheng does things, always acts like an old cow, steady and stable, and makes people feel at ease.
In 1934, after the failure of the fifth anti-"encirclement and suppression" campaign, the central main Red Army decided to start a strategic transfer in order to get rid of the encirclement of the Kuomintang army, and He Shuheng was also because of his old age and worried about accidents on the road, so he left him in Ruijin to carry out armed guerrilla activities behind enemy lines, but no one thought that He Shuheng, who remained behind, jumped off a cliff and sacrificed for the faith in his heart.
According to the guard Deng Zihui, He Shuheng committed suicide by jumping off a cliff in order not to drag everyone down. But 27 years later, there are new theories about He Shuheng's death.
In April 1962, when the local public security bureau of Fujian Province interrogated Li Yu, the head of the Kuomintang Fujian Provincial Local Security Brigade, the real cause of He Shuheng's death was found out, and it was learned from the interrogation that this Li Yu was the captain of the brigade who participated in the arrest mission that year, according to his account:
That day, when they were on patrol, they suddenly heard gunshots in Shanghang County next to them, and they rushed to rush over with people. When they arrived at the place, they saw a group of security regiments fighting with more than a dozen people armed with guns and ragged clothes, and when they saw this, they also began to shoot at them and encircle and suppress them.
Li Yu said that at that time, there was an old man in his fifties and sixties in the guerrillas, with a long beard, and there were people supporting him when he fled, and he felt that he was a high official.
Later, after they hid in the mountain, the security team began to search the mountain, and Li Yu led two people to search under the mountain. Inadvertently under a cliff, he found a person lying down, and when Li Yu walked to the front, he saw that his face was covered with blood. Li Yu's first reaction was that this person had jumped off a cliff and fell to his death.
They searched the body of this person, found some banknotes on his body, and when they wanted to take the money and turn away, this person suddenly woke up and held Li Yu's leg deadly. Scared Li Yu and kicked him with his foot.
However, no matter how Li Yu kicked and punched, this person held Li Yu's leg and did not let go, and the people next to him saw this situation and shot this person to death twice from behind, so that Li Yu could escape. But they didn't know that it was He Shuheng, one of the founders of the CCP, who was killed at that time, and the banknotes on his body were their guerrilla funds, so why He Shuheng would desperately resist.
It was not until 27 years later that the truth of He Lao's sacrifice came to light. In order not to drag down his comrades-in-arms, he chose to jump off a cliff, in order to protect the property of the organization, fell under the enemy's gun, a lifetime, like an ox, will only pay silently, sincere and simple.
