At the beginning of the film, it is a gloomy orphanage in black and white. A little boy let go of the pigeons trapped indoors, and he smiled with relief as he watched the little guy fluttering into the sky. However, what followed was bullying and verbal abuse by several boys. He curled up, but no one came to his aid.
They tore his paintings, threw them out the window, broke his brushes and threatened to throw him down next time. The boy's name was Thomas, and he remained silent, his head bowed, showing a timid expression. Even if he was ridiculed for wetting the bed, he still didn't say a word. Obviously, this was not the first time he had encountered such a bully.
The orphanage was like a cold cage, with no relatives and no friends, restraining his yearning for the outside world. We don't see adults who help, maybe in their eyes it's nothing more than a child's fight, nothing to do with elegance.
However, the bloody example of life tells us that the shadow of childhood can cause a distortion of the mind, and long-term repression will eventually erupt in silence. Thomas was lucky enough to meet Mel, who had come to adopt him.
Mel's mother led him home, a fisherman's house on the edge of the sea. If the tone of the orphanage is gray, then in this natural beauty, it indicates warmth. Especially at the beach, Thomas saw the rainbow and showed a long-lost smile.
Mother Mel had curly blonde hair, turquoise blue eyes, and a bright yellow coat. She was gentle as an angel, and a rainbow shone on Thomas's heart. The rainbow symbolizes beautiful things, such as beautiful natural scenery, the care of Mel's mother, and the kindness of the neighbor girl.
Next, Thomas adapted to life here, went to school, had good friends, and learned to cook with his mother. Everything is so beautiful. Suddenly, one day, he came back from outside and saw the doctor come to their house, saying that his mother was going to be hospitalized. Before leaving, his mother gave Thomas a red handkerchief, hoping that he would be positive and optimistic because it was embroidered with smiling faces. Not long after, the female protagonist left, and the male protagonist was very sad and fell into a state of malaise and alcoholism. Thomas was also sad, but his mother told him that he would come back to see him, and he saw a rainbow at the beach and thought it was his mother who had returned.
The little boy Thomas regained his strength, made the potato beef that his father liked to eat, and began to water the flowers and clean the room. Gradually, dad also liked him and decided to live with him. Mother's love is the color of the rainbow, accompanied by this father and son, continue to move forward!
On the way back from a fishing trip with his adoptive father, he saw a young seal whimpering.
The adoptive father said that it was abandoned by its mother, and it soon lived because of hunger. Thomas plucked up the courage to take care of the baby seal. His adoptive father told him that taking good care of the baby seals was not an easy task. First of all, it takes a lot of food, and secondly, it takes at least a month of persistence. Under Thomas's affirmative eyes, the adoptive father finally admired the child somewhat.
At least, Thomas had the courage to take responsibility. Especially when the adoptive father pressed the baby seal and asked Thomas to send fish to the seal's mouth, he was even more frightened. At that moment, I confess that my impression of the boy Thomas changed: what had been disdainful before, admiration now. In order to take care of the baby seals, he went to sea with his adoptive father every day and learned to fish. This reminds me of another movie I watched, Flying High with You, about a little girl and her father who migrated with geese and successfully protected their habitat.
But once when his adoptive father burned Mel's mother's relic, they had a big fight, and Thomas took the baby seal and rowed away from the sad place. The sky was gray, the waves were tumbling, and Thomas's ship was blown to a screeching state. At this critical moment, the adoptive father, who woke up drunk, arrived in time and saved Thomas.
They hugged each other tightly, and Thomas looked up and asked his adoptive father if he was leaving here. Because as an adoptive family, Thomas's departure requires the signature of the guardian, but the adoptive father has not signed it for a long time. But the adoptive father asked Thomas, would you like to stay? It turns out that the adoptive father respects Thomas's choice: two people get along, not only depends on one person's choice.

Warmed and touched
The whole plot is not complicated and is divided into two parts. The first half is warm and tells the story of Thomas overcoming timidity in his relationship with his adoptive mother; the second half is sensational, deeply in love with his adoptive mother who is seriously ill, and he shoulders the responsibility and maturity of taking care of his adoptive father. Their stories seem to be bland, but they make people cry in the movie.
It's a story about an ordinary family, or a coming-of-age movie. We are warmed, touched, and healed. Parents are often troubled by problem children, whether they are born this way or have no future. But this film tells us that in the face of tenderness and love, these are not problems, and every child can be an angel.
Why Mel's mother chose a child like Thomas is not only Thomas's doubt, but also our doubt. Mother Mel said, you are a lot like me when I was in the orphanage. If we pay attention to watching, we will find that at the moment when Thomas releases the pigeons at the beginning of the film, there is a figure reflected on the door and window, which is Mel's mother. There is no real empathy in the world, but there will always be someone who understands you. "The warmest thing is not love, but the strength to give you love."
Before always feel that love is just a feeling, is the original force in the blood, parents love their children is the nature of nature, but the mother and son are not the same, they never know each other but choose to become a rainbow in each other's lives, Mel taught him to bravely face life, know how to love others, and heal the wounds of his childhood in loving others.
