Wu Changshuo and Qi Baishi, two far-reaching masters of calligraphy and painting and seal engraving in modern times.

The two can be said to be all-round peers, calligraphy, painting, seal carving... But the two also have differences, such as Wu Changshuo wearing official clothes, while Qi Baishi has a lifetime of clothing.

There is a story that Wu Changshuo talked about Qi Baishi, saying that "some people in the north have learned my fur and become famous", and Qi Baishi has carved a seal called "The old man is also in the fur category".

Both of them have many apprentices, and we don't know how calligraphy and painting are taught, but both of them have printed comments on the apprentices, from which we can see the teaching style of the two.

The above is Wu Changshuo's comments in the 1920s for his disciple Wang Gexuan (1897-1988).

A few words, but to the essence. For deficiencies, directly point out the key points; for advantages, do not skimp on good words.

In fact, at this time, the teachers and students had not yet met, Wang Yiyi admired Wu Changshuo's name, and took the printed manuscript to a friend to Shanghai to ask for guidance, and Wu Changshuo was also unceremonious, directly writing, the praise of the praise, the approval of the batch.

The above is a manuscript approved by Qi Baishi in 1938 for his 36-year-old disciple Zhou Tieheng (1902-1968).

Old Man Shiraishi also praised and depreciated this apprentice's seal, but the words of praise accounted for 90%. "Big show" and "cute" are its keywords.

Interestingly, before visiting Qi Baishi, Zhou Tieheng had learned Wu Changshuo's seal, so Qi Baishi commented that some simply said "can be confused with the old man", and some said "give the best", and the characteristics of the two in one furnace are the characteristics of Zhou Tieheng.

For one of the seals, Qi Baishi's comment is "Tieheng Brother carved stone is not like the rest of the fur also", it seems that the old man of Baishi really has a fondness for the word "fur".
