In December 1949, Cai Xinghai, who was born in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province, joined the army when he was 18 years old. Two years later, shortly after the start of the Campaign to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, he took the initiative to sign up for the volunteer army and rushed to the Korean battlefield in the starry night.
In October 1952, the U.S.-led United Nations army mobilized more than 60,000 troops, paired with more than 3,000 aircraft, more than 300 artillery pieces, and more than 170 tanks. Such a powerful military equipment launched a fierce attack on the Shangganling position, which was only defended by two companies of the volunteer army, and the intensity was unimaginable to posterity.
On November 2, 1952, the Shangganling Battlefield was in a state of stalemate, and the Volunteers and the American Army had been facing each other here for more than half a month. On this night, Cai Xinghai, deputy squad leader of the eighth company and the fourth squad of the Volunteer Army, led the whole squad of soldiers to enter the ninth position at the forefront of the 597.9 heights with great fearless spirit.
At that time, the artillery fire had already blown off the mountain by more than two meters, and there was not a single tree on the huge main peak, and even the sparse grass pile was buried by the blown up virtual soil.
Today, the simple word "stationed" at that time meant "walking in front of The Prince of Yan" for the soldiers defending the front line. In order to block the support of the volunteers, the enemy did not hesitate to spend a large number of shells and weave a network of artillery fire blocking at a length of seven or eight hundred meters. But under the leadership of Cai Xinghai, they judged the near and long bullets according to the sound, relied on the intermittent running of artillery fire, and finally climbed to the 597.9 heights.
Faced with the situation in which the enemy was outnumbered, Cai Xinghai even came up with a way to "strike an air explosion" with grenades, grenades, and explosive canisters to block the attack of the US army.
The so-called air explosion actually requires considerable operating skills, such as pulling the grenade lead apart, holding it in the hand for two seconds and then throwing it out, so that the grenade explodes above the enemy's head. It should be known that when the grenade explodes on the ground, it has a blind angle of about 14 degrees due to the impact of the terrain. Within that angle, it's relatively safe. Once the grenade explodes in the air, it is a full range of kills. Therefore, the lethality of "air bombing" is even greater.
Cai Xinghai's tactic of "fighting air explosions" undoubtedly caused great trouble to the US troops trying to take the position. Dozens of American troops were blown up by the grenades that exploded overhead, killing many people on the spot, and the rest of them fled into the wilderness. At about 4 p.m., the enemy attacked again at the size of a company, and was again repelled by a squad of only 9 men. But will the enemy be willing to give up on this?
The answer is clearly no. An hour later, the enemy sent a doubling of the army, and two companies of troops launched a fierce attack, and the air waves generated by the artillery explosion shook the earth and gravel at the top of the cave and fell to the sand.
Nevertheless, the volunteer soldiers hiding in the cave did not lack courage, and some soldiers thought that they might be surrounded by enemy troops and advocated breaking out. Cai Xinghai, who was brave in battle, calmed down, carefully observed the opening of the cave, and then let the soldiers calm down and said:
Now the situation is unclear, and there will be a lot of casualties when going out. If the enemy comes to blow up the hole, I will give up my life to explode! Never let the enemy block our hole.
As soon as the words stopped, he drew out two explosive canisters and placed them on him, ready to die with the enemy troops who dared to surround him. Under such a defensive momentum, although the enemy's attack can not be described as crazy, it was eventually repelled by Cai Xinghai and others again and again.
In this fierce battle that lasted one day and one night, the company commander had tried to send reinforcements three times, but Cai Xinghai refused several times, as to the reason that the front-line positions had no fortifications to rely on in the fierce battle, and the increase in troops would only lead to an increase in casualties.
In this hard-hitting confrontation, Cai Xinghai led the whole class to play a Chinese toughness, and successively repelled 7 attacks of the enemy army, annihilating more than 400 enemy people, and the price was only 3 people slightly injured. Such a battle loss ratio can be called the peak of human military performance.

In October 1981, Cai Xinghai left the army where he had struggled for most of his life and transferred to a timber company in Xianyang as the general secretary of the party branch.
At that time, people often needed to buy furniture when they got married, which required the purchase of timber companies, so this unit was naturally in the market. However, Cai Xinghai's first appearance at this timber company made people realize the unusualness of this veteran:
He not only took the initiative to ask the people around him to supervise himself, but also gave himself a "three chapters of the law", repeatedly refused the "human feelings" sent by others, and even refused the invitations of his relatives and friends.
In September 1984, in the face of the continuous loss of Xianyang Mechanical and Electrical Equipment Company, many people were afraid of taking responsibility and refused to preside over the work. But Cai Xinghai came, and he was appointed as the manager of the company. A year later, the company was preparing to build a business building, and many construction teams were eyeing the contracted project.
At this time, an old subordinate of Cai Xinghai came to the door, hoping to let his construction team contract the project, and promised to give him a color TV and 4,000 yuan as a hard fee after the event was completed. However, such a request was rejected verbally by Cai Xinghai, so that the old subordinates left on the spot.
Unexpectedly, a few days later, Cai Xinghai's eldest brother also came to the door. This is naturally "nothing to climb the Three Treasures Hall", although the eldest brother is concerned about his younger brother Cai Xinghai between the lines, but at the end of the day, he still returns to the contract project. However, this time it was futile.
In fact, when refusing the request of the eldest brother, Cai Xinghai was quite tormented in his heart. He joined the army at the age of 18 and spent 31 years in the army, and the second eldest brother in the family was all saddled up, and he was somewhat indebted to the eldest brother.
However, in Cai Xinghai's view, although the friendship and family affection are precious, they are not an excuse for privately abolishing the public. The veteran party member, who had joined the party as early as March 1953, always remembered his oath that he had sacrificed himself for the country.
In this way, it is not surprising that Cai Xinghai had this shining "195 yuan" when he retired: from 1984 to 1990, Cai Xinghai clearly wrote down that he had used the company's vehicle 10 times, and this 195 yuan was the fuel he paid for it.

The two of them lived a humble life, loved each other all their lives, and had five children.
Many years later, Cai Xinghai will still pick up the "Strategic Map of the Numbering of Positions in the Battle of Shangganling" that he has treasured for many years, and use reading glasses and magnifying glasses to recall his and his comrades-in-arms' glory years. The hero was born in May, but when he was begged by his children for a birthday, he said that his birthday was November 2.
Because this day was the day when he and his comrades-in-arms fought bloodily for the motherland in Shangganling.
