The Russell family lived on top of a hilltop in Mitchell Flat in Mead, southern Ohio, where they had been rented for 9 years, but most of their neighbors still regarded them as outsiders.
Willard Russell, a World War II veteran, is a simple and rough man who teaches his son Yavin to fight violence in a violent way: "You just need to pick the right time, there are more assholes outside." ”

But the introverted Lenola fell in love with the new young priest Preston Tigaddin and became pregnant with his son. Pastor Preston learned of Lenora's pregnancy, but was unwilling to take responsibility, and Lenora finally chose to hang herself.
Yavin soon learns of Lenora's suicide and decides to take revenge on Lenora, so he takes out the German-made Ruger pistol left by his father and runs to the church to kill Pastor Preston. Yavin then leaves Coal Creek in his Chevrolet 3100 and wants to return to Mead to see his old home.
As a result, the car broke down on the road, and Yavin mistakenly got into the car of Carl and Sandy. Carl tries to kill Yavin on the road, but Yavin has already seen the signs, secretly loading the Ruger pistol, and after a round of gun battles, Carl and Sandy both receive bento boxes.

Growing up in the town of Norkensty, Donald dropped out of high school at the age of 17 and went to Chillicosi to find a job as a meat packer and papermaker, and didn't start writing novels until the age of 45.
In the film, Willard teaches his son to fight violence with violence when he is bullied, and this education method comes from the education that Donald received from childhood. And Willard's rough father figure is actually a combination of the rough male figures that Donald encountered in his childhood.
At the beginning of the film, when Willard returns home, he looks up and sees a painting of the Bible by Gustav Doré hanging on the wall, which is based on the new testament chapter 27 of Matthew and tells the story of Simon carrying the cross for Jesus.

There is no good person in the whole film of "God's Forsaken Land", and every character in the movie reflects the strong evil of human nature.
This also inevitably causes the audience to "react badly" when watching the movie, in addition to another major reason for the polarization of the evaluation of "God's Forsaken Land", which is the slow pace of the film and excessive narration.
Director Antonio Campos seems to lack confidence in directing such a huge literary film, and in order to facilitate the audience's understanding, a large number of narrations will be added to the film.
But in this way, those who can easily understand the film, especially the original party who has already read the novel, are bound to be very disgusted with the director's "painting snake". After all, as a literary film with a slightly thrilling element, it is not difficult for ordinary audiences to understand the shallow story.
Although the story of the film revolves around the central character of Yavin Russell, the Dutch brother who plays the adult Yavin does not appear until 1965, near the middle of the film. However, the Dutch brother, who has abandoned the attribute of talking and become introverted and taciturn, can easily shape the role very well, and it is obvious that his acting skills have been very mature.
Sebastian Stan, in order to play the role of Sheriff Lee Bodek, ate himself into a fat man. It was also the first time Sebastian had sacrificed himself for the film, and his big belly was so funny that Pigo didn't recognize him until long after the character appeared.
Reverend Preston, played by Robert Pattinson, is the most brilliant character in the movie, although his figure and appearance are very high, but he is full of scumbag attributes from the inside out. Although the slow narrative pace drags down the overall temperament of the film, the gun battles and violent scenes in the film still have a first-class shooting standard. And the deaths of Carl and Sandy, the killer couple, also reveal a hilarious black humor.
