In 1895, in an underground café in Paris, cinema was born. At the same time, on the other side of the world, countless immigrants and merchants poured into Suzhou, causing the population to swell sharply and economic activities to become more and more diversified.
In 1910, Suzhou, with its rapid development of industry and commerce, ushered in its first film screening. Since then, the new medium of film has gradually taken root in the historic cultural city and has become one of the favorite cultural feasts of Suzhou people.
As one of the series of activities of the 2nd Suzhou Jiangnan Culture and Art International Tourism Festival in China, the "2020 Tribute to Classics • International Restoration Film Exhibition" will be screened in the Suzhou Arts and Humanities Cinema Alliance from September 25 to 27, and the ticket will be officially opened today (11th)!
The screening was guided by the National Film Administration, co-sponsored by the China Film Archive and the Jiangsu Provincial Film Bureau, and hosted by the Propaganda Department of the Suzhou Municipal Party Committee of the Communist Party of China, and it was also the first time that Suzhou held a multi-country film screening. Wim Wenders' fantastic and poetic "Under the Berlin Sky", or David Lynch's dark fairy tale "The Elephant Man" 4K restoration, or Michael Powell's love song and dance classic "Red Diamond", all kinds of heavyweight films. The film festival also specially presented Suzhou citizens with three classic restoration films with Suzhou themes: "Satisfied or Dissatisfied", "Little Moon Building" and "Gourmet".
It is reported that the films screened this time include 5 domestic films such as "Blessing", "Big Trouble in the Heavenly Palace", "Satisfaction or Dissatisfaction", "Gourmet", "Little Moon Building" and 5 foreign films such as "Red Lingyan" (Uk), "Elephant Man" (UK), "Flying Geese South" (Soviet Union), "The Legend of the White Snake" (Japan), "Under the Berlin Firmament" (Germany/France), a total of 40 films.
The event will also be held in Beijing from September 25 to October 8, and the two cities will link up, which is a collision of cultures and the integration of art. During the screening period, there will also be humanities film classes, film restoration experts and scholars seminars and other activities. Some films will also have relevant experts conduct pre-screening guides or post-film dialogues.
This year is the 125th anniversary of the birth of world cinema, this exhibition is characterized by internationalization and specialization, showing excellent classic film works at home and abroad, hoping to let the little friends feel the charm of light and shadow that have regained their lives. With the help of professional film restoration methods, the dust that has been cast over time is finely wiped away and regains its brilliance.
This time, the Suzhou Arts and Humanities Cinema Alliance was guided by the Propaganda Department of the Suzhou Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, and was jointly established by 5 theaters, including Suyi Cinema (IMAX Store of Art Center), Dushu Lake Film Theater, Wanda Cinema (Wuzhong Store), Happy Blue Ocean (Shilu Store), and Lumiere (Golden Eagle Store of High-tech Zone). The alliance aims to build a display and exchange platform for genre films with artistic quality, documentary value and educational functions, and create a good urban artistic and humanistic atmosphere.
Lu Wenfu once said, "The city is the materialization of man." The suzhou built by the literati and scholars feeds the spiritual temperament of the whole city. I believe that in this film event, in the collision of excellent Chinese and foreign films
Suzhou's small partners will surely be able to find the belonging and resonance of the famous cultural city.
