Li Baoguo was a professor at Hebei Agricultural University before his death. He took root in the Taihang Mountains for thirty-five years, and from the beginning of his work in the former Nanyu Village, Li Baoguo settled his "home" in the Taihang Mountains. Li Baoguo gets up early and is greedy all year round, even if it is windy and rainy, he goes up the mountain, studies the subject, and when he is hungry, he uses steamed bread and boiled water as a meal. He often said: "To engage in agricultural scientific research, we must be like peasants planting land, sowing spring and autumn harvest, and being down-to-earth." "In more than 30 years, Li Baoguo has made 1.4 million mu of barren mountains green, driving farmers in mountainous areas to increase their income by 5.85 billion yuan." He was indifferent to fame and fortune, and did not take the remuneration given by the peasants, nor did he want shares in the enterprise. On April 10, 2016, Li Baoguo died of a heart attack and ineffective rescue.
