Recently, a 17-year-old man in Queensland, Australia, died after being accidentally stung by a box jellyfish on a local beach.

According to media reports, the man was swimming in Patterson Point near Bamaga on February 22 when he was accidentally stung by a box jellyfish and rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, a week later (1 March) the man was pronounced dead. It is reported that this is the first box jellyfish fatality incident in Australia in 15 years.

It is reported that the box jellyfish is named after its body shape, and its tentacles are covered with small needles containing a poisonous liquid, known as the "stinger sac". Australia's State Oceanic Service says there are about 50 species of box jellyfish, and only a handful of venoms are deadly to humans.

The Australian box jellyfish is considered one of the most toxic marine organisms, with a body length of up to 30 cm in diameter and a tentacle length of up to 3 m. Authorities said that being stung by an Australian box jellyfish would immediately produce extreme pain. Since records began in the 1880s, there have been at least 70 deaths of box jellyfish in Australian waters.

Local doctors remind visitors to take precautions when swimming in northern waters, wearing professional wetsuits or protective equipment before diving. (Text Eight Barrels)
