Born at the bottom, he wrote the motto "I am a Chinese and want to make some contributions to China" when he was a child in chongyi Academy in his hometown. After going through the study path of Hangzhou, Nanjing and the United States, Tao Xingzhi resolutely gave up his overseas life and devoted himself to the brave and arduous road of education and salvation of "thousands of teachings and teachings to be real people". He put forward educational theories such as "life is education", "society is school", and "teaching is one", and put them into practice and fought for the education cause of the Chinese nation all his life. To this day, his educational philosophy and proposition still have tenacious vitality, guiding generations of educators to cut through thorns.

Tao Xingzhi and Shanghai have a deep relationship, and Baoshan is known as his "second hometown". Mr. Tao Xingzhi's great-grandson Tao Kan sorted out important historical moments and events in "Tao Xingzhi's Early Activities in Shanghai and the Establishment of the Shanhai Engineering Society": In 1914, Tao Xingzhi took the "China" mail ship from Wusong Wharf in Baoshan to study in the United States.

In March 1931, he returned to Shanghai from Japan and lived in hiding on North Sichuan Road, and the following year the "Declaration" began to serialize Tao Xingzhi's educational novel "Ancient Temple Bell Ringing", putting forward educational views such as "society is the school, life is education" and "teaching is one", and for the first time put forward the idea of establishing an engineering group. In May 1932, he drafted the "Preliminary Plan For the Experiment of the Rural Engineering Corps", and after careful consideration, in October of the same year, he founded the "Shanhai Engineering Group" in the Mengjiamuqiao and Xiaohoujiazhai areas of Dachang, named "Shanhai" which means to go to the country together, to integrate the workshops, schools, and society into one, to carry out military training, production training, civil rights training, fertility training, etc., to pass on the concept of "work to maintain health, learn to be born, and the regiment to protect life".

With the changes in the situation of the Chinese revolution at that time, the Shanhai Engineering Group not only assumed the responsibility of popularizing education, but also became a gathering place for the development of revolutionary forces of the Communist Party of China, and artists such as Shen Junru, Tian Han, Zou Taofen, Xian Xinghai and other artists and social progressives came to teach.
At the beginning of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Tao Xingzhi went to Chongqing and founded the Yucai School at the Gusheng Temple, and in April 1946, he returned to Shanghai, and in May, the Engineering Group resumed the school in Dachang Shenjialou and renamed it "Shanhai Experimental Rural School", and set up the Yucai School office in Shanghai, preparing to move the Yucai School to Baoshan. Regrettably, just 2 months later, Tao Xingzhi died of long-term overwork at the age of 55.

In order to commemorate the merits of educators, on October 18, 1986, the Shanghai Tao Xingzhi Memorial Hall built on the former site of the Shanhai Engineering Group was opened to the public, in 2002, the memorial hall was relocated to Dahua Xingzhi Park in the south of Dachang, consisting of a group of buildings with both emblem and Su-style characteristics, in 2016, Baoshan District is committed to building a "Tao Xingzhi Education Innovation and Development Zone", implementing the construction of the memorial hall and the "museum and garden" of Dahua Xingzhi Park, showing the style of educators in a more in-depth and multi-faceted way.
In addition, on the map of Baoshan today, there are a number of schools and public cultural institutions named "Xingzhi", which jointly practice the idea of Xingzhi and spread the culture of Xingzhi.
