The man, who claimed to be Jiro Yamaguchi, a technical officer of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, had just arrived from the Department of Health because there was a group dysentery infection in the nearby area and needed to be disinfected extensively. When the police contacted Matsui, they found that 94 of the 100 business cards he had printed had been distributed, of which 32 said that the business cards had been lost, while only 24 people could provide evidence of the loss, and the remaining 8 people had serious suspicions.
In August 1948, through a business card clue, the police went to Hokkaido to arrest the well-known painter Hirazawa Sadatsu.
At that time, the police officer Ofegii believed that Hirazawa Sadatsu was the real murderer for the following reasons: First, he exchanged business cards with Matsui Kei, but could not produce evidence that the business cards were missing. Second, his alibi was inadequate. Third, he had relatives who worked in pharmaceutical companies and had the opportunity to get medicines. Third, after the crime, he inexplicably had an extra 100,000 yen in his passbook.
It seems that the truth has come out to catch the real murderer, but the imprisonment of Pyeongtaek Sadatsu adds to the mystery of this case.
First of all, Hirasawa Sadatsu resolutely refused to admit that he was a criminal, and he said in front of his wife and brother, "The gods of heaven and earth swear that I am never a criminal." Secondly, in the identification of 11 witnesses, 5 felt that Pyeongtaek was similar to the criminal, and 6 felt that they were not the same person. Furthermore, he said he was with his wife at the time of the crime, but the police did not use the testimony of immediate family members. That said, after a month of frantic interrogation, Pyeongtaek bowed his head and confessed.
However, after going to court, Pyeongtaek changed his confession and said he was innocent. And has been filing an appeal for 5 years. It was not until 1955 that the Supreme Court finally upheld the death penalty.
Because the case is still full of doubts, it is difficult to convince everyone, and Pyeongtaek's death penalty has been delayed.
In order to show his innocence by dying, Pyeongtaek attempted suicide three times in prison. In 1987, at the age of 95, Pyeongtaek died of lung disease in prison.
He spent his life in prison for 39 years. No one knows how Pyeongtaek was wronged and unwilling to live, and this case has become one of the most famous unsolved cases in Japanese history.
The famous writer Kiyonaga Matsumoto, in the book "The Black Mist of Japan", also suspected that the case was committed by the former members of the 731 unit, and then blamed on Pyeongtaek.
