I. Writer Micro Interview (Shi Xin x Li Yingchun)

SS: What was your writing experience like?
Lee: Speaking of which, I have been writing for a long time, and I have been writing poetry since the 1990s. At that time, obsessed with postmodernist poetry, he wrote a lot of it alone, and seemed to have achieved nothing except sporadic publications. At that time, as a village teacher, the young, nowhere to put the soul always wandered at night, using reading and graffiti to pass the time. In 1999, he entered the county as a reporter and editor for a tabloid, and in addition to news reports, he mainly wrote poetry and prose in his spare time, and also dabbled in stage works and television features. In 2005, I began to compose a long poem "The Height of Life - Dedicated to the 70th Anniversary of the Long March". Later, this 3,000-line poem was selected for the 2005 China Writers Association Key Works Support Project, becoming the first work in Fujian Province to be selected for the project. After this poem, I developed deep doubts about poetry writing, which shook my confidence, so I gradually shifted my writing to other aspects. During this period, some small achievements were made in prose writing. By December 2008, he had participated in the Advanced Workshop on Literature and Art by Fujian Province. From that training, I consciously started writing novels. In June 2010, the short story "Gun" was published in the headline of the short story of Fujian Literature, which was the first time that a novel was officially published. After that, he began to take the novel as his creative direction. In December 2014, the novella "Daimyofu" was published in the headline of "Mountain Flower", which was my first novella in the true sense of the word and also began my novella writing. In recent years, short stories have been published in publications at all levels and reprinted by the Selected Novels and Novellas Anthology, and have also won some awards, mainly including the Fujian Hundred Flowers Literary and Art Award, the Fujian Provincial Biennial List of Novels, the Fujian Provincial Excellent Literary Works Award, the Fujian Literature Good Book List, and the Liang Bin Novel Award. Among them, the red juvenile novel "Red Star Rangers" has been printed for the 9th time since its publication in 2017, and has been selected as the "Summer Vacation Reading a Good Book" in Fujian Province, the Excellent Children's Book Recommendation List of the Fourth China Readers' Reading Festival, the 2019 National Rural Bookstore Recommended Bibliography, and the National Primary and Secondary School Library With Excellent Recommended Bibliography.
SS: How much does your writing experience relate to your life experience?
Li: The correlation is still quite large. The short and medium stories created over the years are basically based on southwest Fujian, with red culture and Hakka culture as the main form of expression, and the regional characteristics are more obvious, which is related to my personal life. My novel focuses on the land where I grew up, the writing set in western Fujian, the separation of tradition and modernity, and the fate of people in a transformed society, hoping to build their own writing base in writing.
The place name "Yuantian", which appears many times in my novels, is my hometown, and it can be assumed that I deliberately constructed a novel image called Yuantian. Novellas like "Missing Family" and "Friendship Road No. 2" not only use the place name "Yuantian", but also related to my thinking when I was working in my hometown at that time. The novella "Under the Stars", which has just been reprinted by the "Novel Selection", takes a big mountain in my hometown "Shimaqi" as the main activity place, and the protagonist Shusheng Gonggong also has the shadow of my elders. It is worth mentioning that in 2019, I created a long poem reflecting the Gutian Conference, "The Harmony of Falling Snow", which is also based on the theme of a famous meeting Gutian Conference that occurred in my hometown, and now the Gutian Cadre College, the unit where I work, is near the Gutian Meeting site. After the publication of this long poem, the publishing house, the Fujian Provincial Writers Association, and the Provincial Academy of Literature also held a special seminar on works.
SS: What does writing mean to you?
Lee: Writing means that I have my own space, my own white time. Writing is another way I face the world, the one I'm most comfortable with. Although I work with different people all the time, I'm inherently a shy, introvert, and it's my world only when I write some words alone. I'm in charge of my world.
Shi: Let's talk about the creation process of "White Time"?
Lee: The reason for writing "White Time" is actually very simple, there are two sources. One is that about ten years ago I met a fellow monk on the blog, he traveled around, often posted some pictures and texts on the blog, very elegant, but I did not know his real name and specific circumstances, only in an internal journal I compiled myself published his poems, that's all, but I often think of him for no reason, imagine his life. Second, a story told me by my friend was that his junior high school classmate, similar to the life of the third oldest in "White Time", suddenly went to become a monk and suddenly returned more than ten years later. In fact, over the years, young people have been out of the house for a lot, and there are various reasons. I thought it was an interesting thing to do, so I had the urge to write about them.
Regarding the title "White Time", I think everyone wants to have a time that is not disturbed, and wants to live freely in an unfamiliar environment, not to be bound by relatives, acquaintances, and all kinds of worldly eyes. This period of time has nothing to do with the success or failure of the world's understanding, only about one's own heart, only about the part that is not obscured by the world. Such times are what I understand as "white times."
Regarding the monks of the third year, I don't think we need to dwell too much on the reasons for it. The reader doesn't know, I don't know, I just know that he went out of the house not just because of a lost love. Someone asked me, isn't it too fragile for a person to go out of the house just because of a lost love? What about fragility? It's not surprising that we allow everyone to have their own weaknesses and pain points. However, in my novel, it is obvious that the loss of love is part of the cause, but it is certainly not all, because if it is only because of the loss of love, it will not be deliberately to Chengdu to become a monk. Every step of life is not determined by a single factor, it must be a comprehensive factor at work. The space set up here is actually for readers to participate and complete the imagination of the novel together.
What exactly does this novel have to say? I don't know, I don't have so many small words, just want to present a story, a life, what the reader reads, what I think is, is right. Everyone has their own way of life, whether it is the monks and customs of the third elder, or the search and thinking of "I", it is a part of daily life, if it can trigger everyone's thinking, the purpose of the novel will be achieved. Personally, because I am a person in the system, what I long for in my heart is to be able to live my own way, not to be bound by the world, even if it is only for a period of time. Now that I think about it, maybe this reason is closer to the intrinsic reason for my writing.
I like to present in writing, let the characters be "really" presented in the novel, I do not replace his ideas, try to let the reader read without "separation", no trace of preaching. Therefore, I don't have a lot of technical things in my writing techniques, perhaps because I am sloppy and my writing level is not high, so I can only write honestly and let the characters speak. In my opinion, if the characters in the novel can enter the reader's heart, my purpose will be achieved.
Regarding the end of the novel, whether it is the end of the reunion, I do not particularly value it. At that time, when writing, the characters should have gone this way, so they wrote according to this. Of course, there is also a background, many friends joke that I often write people to death or the ending is a little gray. Fortunately, this time it was a success. I returned the ending of the novel to the story my friend told me.

A few thoughts on "White Time"

First, by impression, "White Time", when I first saw this kind of novel named after the verb phrase, I felt that the meaning of "white" was even far better than "time".
In this short story, "time" is divided into two parts: a family search trip between 1996 and 2007 (this part is detailed); and a journey of peace in 2007 or so (this part is shorthand).
It should be said that the writing of the first ten years seems to occupy most of the space; in fact, the text of the last ten years, which seems to be a brush stroke, is wrapped in the core of this novel: solid and hard.
Second, it is a novel about escape, search, rebellion, redemption, return, etc. The protagonist, The Old Third Tang Xiaowen, let us read the smell in Yu Hua's "Eighteen-year-old going out and far away".
Looking for the third elder, which seems to be a narrative main line, in fact, another hidden line (or a side line) is a "bureau" carefully designed by the writer: in this case, why does the third elder run away from home, and even quietly return to buddhism after taking refuge in Buddhism?
Perhaps the reader wants to peel away this hard nucleus.
The clever Li Yingchun did not decrypt it, he just let the text grow along his own thoughts. In the first ten years, why was the third old like this? Perhaps escaping from the homeland and returning to the roots, with the mental trajectory of a considerable number of young boys, but in this novel, Li Yingchun does not seem to reveal the answer: is it unwilling to be a primary school teacher? Is it an emotional entanglement with Lin Lifang? Or the crushing and suffocating of life that made him escape into the Buddha's gate...
There are no answers, only speculations— the infinite possibilities of the ending of a short story, infinitely magnified here.
The current trend of the novel, the gradual dilution of the storyline and even dispensable, presents the difference between the strength of the novelist. Taking this novel text as an example, if it clearly informs the direction of the character's fate, it will damage the deep charm.
Time, the first ten years are white, or the next ten years are white? In Li Yingchun's novel, it seems that the good life of the last ten years of the old three small texts gives us a vague answer. The girl who runs the small restaurant becomes his wife, and let him go luck, whether it is compensation for his turbulent and displaced life in the previous ten years, or the fateful karma, or the blessing brought by the practice, there is no interpretation here. However, the mother's disability has brought back his children's love, and the mother's "worthwhile" words speak of the great pain that the family has endured in search of relatives.
Third, the "time" that seems to be "white" is actually not white at all, it seems to be pale, innocent and blank.
In the first ten years, the old three were empty; in the next ten years, Xiaowen may still be empty. Perhaps, this kind of ethereal time that is not as white as "white" is more like "white" is the life show that the writer Li Yingchun showed us: ten years, once drifting in the sea; ten years, just looking back.
Taking the two sentences of "The Tenth Spring" in Xiaowen's blog, in fact, we can imagine: after Xiaowen left home, he always wanted to come back; but what kind of opportunity made him make up his mind to go home and anchor in the harbor of family and no longer leave? The core of this seemingly harder novel is Li Yingchun's intention.
Fourth, Teacher Li Yingchun is very good at telling stories. This seemingly simple story, replaced by a mediocre writer, may be just a small novel to deal with, or satisfied with the bitterness of the decade, and perhaps there is a "reunion" ending that is more than this tearful end.
However, the writer did not. From the writer's flowing narration, we can feel that the writer's ability to tell stories is superb.
As far as the novel's N narrative perspectives are concerned, this "meta-narrative" perspective, through the narration of "I", not only has a sense of substitution, but even has the flavor of avant-garde novels. Seemingly tragic and compassionate emotions, the writer does not meet through the search for relatives - encounters do not return - do not say - do not say - do not leave such a storyline, so that readers in the pursuit of suspense, easily read such a seemingly tragic novel, and fly white everywhere, do not say anything broken.
Fifth, some people may say, why should the third elder be vulgar? And between the customs, there is no bit of foreshadowing, or the ending is a bit hasty?
Admittedly, this seems to be the writer's hasty finishing, or a kind of "lazy" finishing. Not really.
We may wish to analyze that the third elder is outside, seemingly a monk, in fact, the only thing he suffers is his own self-knowledge, but he chooses to escape or has been disguised: this is also the normal state of young and vigorous people - when he meets his mother's pain and hospitalization, it seems that he can't hold it - among them, the power of maternal love calls for his vulgarity. The image of the mother, who seems to rarely appear in the text, in the silent place, makes me marvel.
Perhaps the writer himself did not expect that the seemingly difficult to deal with the willow has achieved the emotional world of this novel. In addition, the acquisition of the third elder's windfall seems to have the element of karma in the underworld. If teacher Li Yingchun has the heart of "laziness", then this "laziness" seems to be a natural success and a stone.
Sometimes, at the end of the novel, there is a flying stroke, and the writer himself is not expected, or even difficult to control. The ghostly love of writing a novel about Shinto is what novelists dream of.
From the reading of this novel text, for me, I realized an unexpected harvest.

White time, has always been "white" as the main line of the novel metaphor, through the bizarre disappearance of the third elder, or Tang Xiaowen as the line of writing, constantly suspenseful, twists and turns to promote the development of the storyline. This is the psychological state in which we write, including myself, in the face of especially pure literary writing, will anyone watch our writing? The third elder's understanding of "bad things" and "beautiful things" is both suspense and mystery.
The reason why the third elder was able to decide for ten years must have felt that he had "put down the bad things"; and in the face of the "beautiful things" that made people sad in the world, he found that "the attachment was not exhausted". Therefore, in the short days taken care of by his mother after breaking her leg, the third elder, no, Master Ruchen actually decided to be vulgar, which made the old man unexpected: "My old leg is worth it!" ”。 Maybe this is a Zen machine?
In fact, the Third Elder's Zen machine is like a heavenly machine, which cannot be leaked. From leaving Heron Island in 1996 to becoming a monk in Chengdu in 1997, there must have been something that he didn't want anyone other than himself to know, these things you can think of as complicated, you can think of simple, but for the third elder himself, it is not complicated nor simple, just like monasticism, cloud travel after renunciation, and finally return to the world, everything is the best arrangement.
Because, this is the most important "white time" of his life.

Life has infinite possibilities, and the novel has multiple metaphorical assumptions. I read many stories about "escape", but usually the protagonists are women.
I read One of Alice Monroe's novels, Escape, about a heroine, Carla, who escapes twice in her life. The idea of "escaping" can be rehearsed countless times in the mind, the troubles of the world, the helplessness of reality, and in some ways, the lover of literature is happy, because he can escape through words, borrow the stories of others, pour blocks in his chest. Sometimes I often can't help but sigh: words are really good medicine, with pens to create dreams, you can go anywhere I want to go.
When I read White Time, I imagined that the story didn't end like this.
I have a habit of reading novels, and for novels that interest me, halfway through reading, I'll stop and close the book, and I won't read the rest of the story, and I'll continue to write the story in my own way in my head. The ending of "White Time" that I want to continue to write is: the old third Tang Xiaowen will not return, he will continue to disappear into the vast sea of people...
The brilliance of this novel may lie in quietly writing a character who has not appeared much, the world is ups and downs, from "program-controlled telephone" to "information age", in this complicated and changing era, he is hidden from the world, what is he doing? What exactly is he hiding from? This leaves a lot of room for imagination.
No matter what the reason the third was missing, it no longer mattered. He escaped from this complicated human world for a long period of "white time", perhaps he enjoyed two lives that others did not enjoy, in a sense it can be said that he lived in two time and space, he should often recall that light life outside the world.
At the end of the novel, there is a happy ending, just like the perfect stories: from then on, he lived a happy life. This is an adult fairy tale that gives readers many expectations and is in line with the dream of stability in this world.
"White Time" is like a mirror, looking at all of our inner anxieties, unwillingness, the tiredness of waking up in the middle of the night and every morning to suddenly face life, and the fuss we have to do about it, the tossing and turning, the adventures we have to take for this... But most of us are making tough choices about sixpence and the moon.
I wish we could look up at the stars and the moon with words. Arrive at the innocent self in the toss of escape and return.
Reading Li Yingchun's short story "White Time" has a feeling

There were doubts at the time, and it is now certain that this statement is biased. I think the language of a good work should be natural, accurate, realistic and substitutionary. Fiction is the art of language and thought, indispensable. This novel is eloquent, not slow, very comfortable, people can't help but want to read it, this is the first feeling of the novel "White Time" to me.
Then there is the text, the storyline of the whole novel is not bizarre, the key is well narrated, the most valuable thing is that the protagonist is a monk, promised to go home after the family tried his best to find it, after taking care of the sick mother, suddenly wanted to be vulgar, this place is not much ink, but it is not abrupt, this is the ability of the narrative, indicating that the front of the paving rhythm is in place, here it takes a sharp turn, as if it comes out naturally, which is not easy.
After I read it, I have a strong feeling that each of us in the long river of life, there is a period of stage or event similar to "renunciation", "escape", "out of line", the text has not been explained to the protagonist why the third son is out of the house, this is a suspense, the text clicked a little, may be because of feelings, but very vague, not exact, I think this is the author's cleverness, just like each of us do some things, do not need to explain the reason to anyone, do not need to let the world fully understand their own motives and purposes, I have a male police colleague, quite old, and suddenly went to learn ballet, which may be his childhood dream, maybe nightmare, as if on a wide beach, walking footprints, late tide will calm him. The author uses an event to reveal the whole situation of life, and it reads with a sense of inner fit. Of course, this kind of "provocation" will bring great pain to relatives and friends, but in this life, everyone is more or less doing such a thing, including the "provocation" of thinking, so understanding, allowing, and accepting oneself and others to "dive" for a period of time and then go ashore is a kind of insight, insight and thickness, but it is a deep integration with the world.
