Wang Xiaobo's Growth: "A History of Modern Chinese Suffering"
Wang Xiaobo was born in a family of revolutionary martyrs, his ancestral home in Lianshan County, Jiangxi Province, and he went to Taiwan with his family in 1949. Wang Xiaobo's mother, Zhang Liman, was a member of the Chinese Communist Party who was betrayed by traitors and died during the Kuomintang's "White Terror" period. His father, Wang Jianwen, a kuomintang lieutenant colonel, was sentenced to seven years in prison for the so-called crime of "knowing the bandits and not reporting them," and the Wang family's life was in trouble.
But Wang Xiaobo was not overwhelmed by the harsh environment, and after graduating from Taichung No. 2 Middle School, Wang Xiaobo was admitted to the Philosophy Department of National Taiwan University and became a disciple of the famous logician and philosopher Yin Haiguang.
In 1971, Wang Xiaobo received his master's degree and stayed in the Department of Philosophy of National Taiwan University as a lecturer. Because of his propaganda of liberalism and the introduction of the fishing movement on the campus of National Taiwan University, Wang Xiaobo was involved in the "Taiwan University Philosophy Department Incident" and was detained and interrogated by the Kuomintang authorities on the charge of so-called "propaganda for bandits", and had to leave NTU in 1974. Wang Xiaobo deeply resented Lee Teng-hui and Chen Shui-bian's so-called "imperialization" and "de-Sinicization" of Taiwan's middle school history textbooks when they were in charge of government on the island of Taiwan.
He once exchanged pens with Lee Teng-hui in the newspaper media for the purpose of "de-Sinicization" and bitterly criticized Lee Teng-hui's attempt to use textbooks to carry out "imperial and people-oriented education."
