The Founders Building at Adobe Headquarters: A model for the workplace of the future

Adobe co-founders Dr. John Warnock and Dr. Chuck Geschke founded Adobe in 1982 and brought Adobe to San Jose in 1994, becoming the first major tech company to invest in real estate in downtown San Jose, California. Recently, the company celebrated the inauguration of another major milestone, the Founders Tower, the fourth building of Adobe's headquarters, reaffirming Adobe's commitment to technology and the ever-changing skyline of downtown San Jose.

Adobe is a revolutionary software company that is changing the landscape of digital creativity and innovation. The inauguration of the Founders building is also a model for the future of the workplace. It's a shared, connected, adaptable destination designed for the creative and innovative communities of the future, and a place to nurture the technology, innovation and business of the future.

Here are some of the features that make it a model for the workplace of the future:

01/

100% electric

The Founders building, the first all-electric building of its size in Silicon Valley, will be powered by 100% renewable energy, minimizing the building's carbon footprint and reinforcing the company's commitment to sustainability. The all-electric building enables Adobe to draw energy from the grid at a time when the hybrid energy mix is cleaner and ensures that battery storage or other on-site energy solutions are easy to integrate in the future. Gensler worked with Adobe and Atelier Ten, an environmental design consultant, to develop key energy-saving strategies, such as a high-performance envelope to reduce glare, maximize natural lighting and comfort, and reduce the building's overall energy consumption by 40 percent compared to comparable buildings.

Breathe life into your brand through color

Adobe's brand DNA is integrated into the 18-story building through the use of color. Throughout the building, the principles of color psychology are used to guide people to choose the space that suits their needs: for example, blue represents focus, green promotes collaboration, and orange encourages connection and community. The colors used in the space are designed to provide subtle cues for employees to help them move from one space to another throughout the workday. To that end, Gensler partnered with Laura Guido-Clark Design to define Adobe's corporate identity and values, and to develop a partnership with Love Good Color? This is a combination of science and sensory color tools and methods.

Bright, colorful "color lines" are visible from the building's exterior, signaling Adobe's purpose and desired emotional response. The orange stripe represents the "social zone" such as the central area and all-staff meeting rooms to create a sense of belonging, connection and community, the green stripe represents the "collaboration zone" designed to evoke a collaborative, inclusive team spirit, and the blue stripe is refreshing, so the blue stripe is used for the "focus and rest space" to create a fresh and serene atmosphere.

The bright, colorful design theme runs through the workspace and symbolizes Adobe's DNA.

Adaptability, future resilience, and choice to support new ways of working

The new building is highly adaptable, with raised floor systems and flexible multi-purpose spaces to respond to changing technological developments and future ways of working. The building supports a highly collaborative workforce, with a variety of work sites throughout the building, giving teams and individuals the freedom to choose and adapt to their environment to work at their best.

Gensler's workplace research found that providing employees with choices about how and where they work plays a significant role in space efficiency and work experience. In fact, according to Gensler's latest research, 88% of office workers in the highest-performing workplaces have options.

In the early days of the pandemic, the design team and Adobe realized that teams would work differently. As a result, each floor is laid out in a "neighborhood" format to meet the needs of different teams, such as a double-level projection space for small all-hands meetings, co-working/collaboration desks, and a movable whiteboard space equipped with audiovisual capabilities to support small work sessions and collaborative work. In addition, "adventure rooms" such as podcast rooms, VR experience rooms, meditation rooms, craft rooms, and music rooms have been created.

A variety of food stations are also a great option for casual socializing or impromptu meetings.

An airy space from the inside out

In this case, the main connecting element of the building, known as the "wisp", connects the building in a series of double-height spaces that serve as the main social spaces within the building. The changing color lines represent Adobe's love of color and community, while also connecting Adobe's thriving culture to the rest of the campus and the city of San Jose. The high transparency of the glass façade brings out the color and vibrancy of these spaces and allows the surrounding community to see what's going on inside the building, while the façade system is designed and adjusted with employee comfort, cost and operating energy in mind.

Connections are the catalyst for creativity

Inside, the strategic layout of the space and circulation provides more opportunities for casual encounters and spontaneous interactions. For example, a double-height social center connects a pair of work floors and a series of interconnected staircases to connect the larger gathering spaces. These strategic plans allow the building to create a catalytic space for Adobe's creative community.

The layout of each floor is planned around clusters of workstations and meeting rooms known as "neighborhoods", and they are all located near a larger, flexible gathering area known as a "team hub." A large gathering space is flanked by architectural amenities such as a library, multi-purpose meeting rooms, food halls and dining spaces, and even a co-working bar with a higher level of hospitality and comfort.

Well-designed amenities bring convenience and choice

A variety of public spaces and dining facilities throughout the building provide a welcoming, sophisticated feel, including a food hall, coffee bar, co-working lounge, and private dining area. Providing unique spaces and authentic cuisine is nothing new to Adobe, and creating spaces that employees need, not just want—like convenience stations with hot food and groceries—is key to making the office an irresistible destination.

Adobe's concept of food as a catalyst for community and connection extends to the experience design on the ground floor: where employees and visitors can experience the culinary arts of Adobe's employee kitchen, and gourmet coffee at Creative Grounds, which will open to the public next year.

The design goes far beyond Americans with Disabilities Act standards

The design of the Founders building exceeds the minimum requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accessible Design Standards. By purposefully focusing on biophilic patterns, equity in planning, and color theory, the space promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.

First, the design team planned with ease of movement in mind, creating three equal workspaces (a series of blocks of workstations, desks, collaboration spaces, and meeting rooms) and ensuring the same movement from each workspace to the center of the floor (where restrooms, elevators, and hubs are located). In addition, the passage has been widened and the height of the bar has been lowered to make it easier for all groups of people to use. A pedestrian bridge currently under construction will connect the new building to Adobe's existing campus, increasing ease of access for employees.

Because rounded corners are psychologically associated with a sense of security, closeness, and friendliness, the design team created a more human-centric and approachable design experience by detailing the corners of some corridors, as well as the woodwork. Various "nodes" have also been designed in the space to support the integration of neurodiverse individuals by dividing team spaces, study spaces, and rest spaces. In addition, the design team decided to ditch the high-contrast color scheme to avoid dizziness, except at the desired floor transition.

Biophilic design connects people and nature throughout the space.

08/

Focus on health, biophilia, and inclusivity

Natural lighting, daylight illumination, and biophilia are the main factors in the design team's planning and design approach. Gensler worked with Atelier Ten to develop a natural and daylight lighting strategy. Through biophilic design models, combined with plants, sound, dynamic, and diffused light, the various spaces within the building are designed to connect people to nature. In addition to abundant daylight and views, the building offers a variety of spaces for employees to relax and rejuvenate, including an outdoor terrace, wellness room, meditation room, and a library area for deep focus and quiet reflection.

Open to the community

As a company that powers innovation in the creative and digital tech worlds, the Founders building is full of art and immersive technology experiences. Gensler's Digital Experience team partnered with Float4, powered by Adobe Experience Manager, to showcase work from Behance and the Adobe Stock artist community on the digital art column. Unique art installations designed by incredible local artists adorn the entire building as a tribute to the rich cultural diversity of the city of San José.

What ties it all together is the Adobe Experience Museum, a public showcase of Adobe's values, mission, products, and community-focused experiences that immerse visitors in the experience.

At a time when companies are looking to reinvent their workplaces, the new Founders Building is a model of the workplace of the future – one that inspires creativity, embraces sustainability and inclusivity, and empowers teams and individuals to adapt and choose their environment to do their best work.

The office space features office furniture products from MillerKnoll, Stylex, Naughtone, Hightower, Martin Brattrud, and a variety of flowers and tables custom-made by MTRL for the café and co-working rooms. The Founders Building at 120 Adobe HQ is the first all-electric building in Silicon Valley and is a model of the workplace of the future: a workplace that inspires creativity, embraces sustainability and inclusivity, and empowers teams and individuals to adapt and choose their environment to do their best work.
