Mysterious chalk markings on oak barrels
For almost a century, from 1869 to 1964, there was a tradition in the cellars of Jerez, Spain, whereby winemakers marked the barrels with chalk with the letters "XR" (Extra Reserva) when they found a barrel of wine with unique characteristics not found in other barrels. These "XR" wines, with their mysterious chalk markings, are hidden deep in the cellar and serve as a measure of a winemaker's quality.

Continuing this tradition, in the historic history of the Marqués de Riscal, these "winemaker's picks" are called Reserva Medoc and XR.
