Lotus leaf fern is a national first-class protected plant and a rare and endangered plant unique to the Three Gorges Reservoir area. Recently, researchers in Nanchuan have successfully achieved artificial breeding of this species outside its native habitat by means of spore propagation, which provides an important guarantee for the off-site propagation and protection of this species.

Compared with ramification, the emergence rate of spore propagation is higher, and the spores on one leaf can breed thousands of seedlings. However, the difficulty of this method is also greater, the whole process needs to go through multiple links such as seedling, branching, transplanting, etc., and at the same time there are very strict requirements for temperature, humidity, light and other conditions, scientific researchers after more than two years of exploration and experiments, and finally overcome all kinds of difficulties and achieved success.

It is understood that the lotus leaf fern has extremely strict requirements for the growth environment, coupled with its own low breeding ability, so it is currently distributed in a few places such as Wanzhou and Shizhu in the Three Gorges Reservoir area in the whole Asia. This artificial breeding is the largest spore propagation method in China, and the success of breeding will provide more possibilities for ex situ conservation and wild reintroduction of this species.
