Japan's 7.3 mud flow, a natural disaster and man-made disaster.

The Great Society.

On July 3, 2021, a devastating landslide occurred in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Heavy rains for several days loosened the mountain and caused flash floods. Torrents carrying tens of thousands of cubic meters of mudslides are like "heavenly punishments" that descend on the city. The tremendous impact uprooted and devoured the trees in its path, and the houses were torn apart little by little like papier-mâché.

After the mudslide enters the gentle area, the speed of travel begins to slow down, but the destructive force is still enormous. Residents could only watch as their homes were torn apart and buried in the streets. The slow-moving mudslide resembles a giant black snake that swims away, making people feel intimidating. This was Japan's "7.3 Shizuoka Mudslide Disaster".

The mudslide disaster occurred mainly in Atami City, a city with a population of just over 40,000 people in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture. This small town was built in the col of Mt. Izu. Continuous rain began in the Mt. Izu area on July 1, and by July 3 the rainfall began to increase, causing a flash flood in Mt. Izu. The flash flood then triggered a landslide, and 120,000 cubic meters of earth and rock poured down the col where Atami City is located. And in the process of landslides, rainfall continues to increase, which contributes to the power of mudslides. From the picture, you can feel the tremendous destructive power contained in such a black torrent.

The mudslide lasted for six hours and then began to slow down. The torrential rain did not stop, and the flood water was still flowing through the muddy mudslides. After the disaster, the city was completely covered in mud, and all kinds of vehicles on the streets were buried in the mud. No one knows how much tragedy is covered under this black mud.

As a country prone to natural disasters, Japan is threatened by natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions all year round. Natural disasters are like time bombs, which can happen at any time, and the human factor has to be mentioned. In the case of the sudden mudslide in Shizuoka Prefecture, the total amount of the mudslide is estimated to be about 120,000 cubic meters, half of which came from the location of the filling. The excavated earth and rocks were piled up in a nearby valley, causing the source of the landslide. This is a common phenomenon in mountainous Japan.

Therefore, this mudslide is the result of natural disasters and man-made disasters.
