Nuclear power plants suffered severe damage, and nuclear reactors were flooded by tsunamis, seawater and waste. The impact of the accident went far beyond Chernobyl, turning the area around Fukushima into no man's land and dealing a huge blow to Japan. Eleven years after the accident, many issues remain unresolved, including the mutation of wild animals and plants and the treatment of nuclear wastewater. The Japanese government should take more responsibility than act for economic gain. The safety of nuclear energy must be given sufficient attention, especially in earthquake- and tsunami-prone countries.
