According to the monitoring of the Japan Meteorological Agency, at 23:14 local time on the 17th, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake occurred in the coastal waters west of Ehime Prefecture in Japan (Bungo Waterway area) (officially measured by the China Earthquake Network as 6.2), with a maximum seismic feel of 6 weak and an epicenter depth of 50 kilometers. The Japan Meteorological Agency said there was no risk of a tsunami from the earthquake. Shortly after the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency released another message saying that at around 23:27 on the 17th, another 4.3-magnitude earthquake occurred in the coastal waters west of Ehime Prefecture in Japan (Bungo Suido area), with a maximum seismic intensity of 3 and an epicenter depth of 30 kilometers. The Japan Meteorological Agency will hold a press conference at 1:10 a.m. local time on the 18th regarding the earthquake that occurred on the night of the 17th.

According to the official Weibo of the National Early Warning Information Dissemination Center, at 22:14 on April 17 (Beijing time), a 6.5-magnitude earthquake occurred in the sea area of Shikoku Island, Japan (33.22 °N, 132.41 °E), with an epicenter depth of 51 kilometers. Based on preliminary seismic parameters, the Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources judged that the earthquake may cause a local tsunami around the epicenter, but will not cause catastrophic effects on the mainland coast.
