On May 12, 2008, the Wenchuan earthquake came so suddenly that even the 108 Arhats in the Luohan Temple couldn't help but tremble slightly.
Although the Luohan Temple has existed for more than 1,000 years, the structure of the temple is different and uses a mortise and tenon structure, so although the temple has been destroyed, it is also because this structure does not collapse like the building under the mountain.
The pilgrims and monks of the temple also rushed out to some of the better monasteries, while hundreds of villagers came down the hill to seek refuge.
Seeing this scene, Master Su Quan of the temple gave an order and did not hesitate to open the gate to welcome those homeless villagers.
Although the temple has a taboo of precepts, Master Su Quan knows that saving people is the first priority, so Master Su Quan convened a meeting of monks and lay people in the temple, and finally he proposed three unconditions: unconditionally accept the affected people, unconditionally provide help, and unconditionally provide the items that can be used in the temple to the affected people.
Soon, the temple was also surrounded by fleeing people, with varying degrees of injuries, as well as some pregnant women who were about to give birth.
However, under the leadership of Venerable Su Quan, the monks in the temple also took out the things that could help the victims in the temple in an orderly manner, and as a result, the monks had no quilt and a place to sleep, so they could only sit in the open space in the courtyard with an umbrella for three days, and survived the wind and rain, cold and hungry.
At the height of the disaster, the monks did not ignore the affected people, but instead went to drink their remaining water and eat their remaining food.
At the same time, in order to ensure that the courtyard is clean and free from epidemics, these monks will also continue to provide hot water for the victims every day.
But disasters often follow one after another, and in this most difficult moment, a pregnant woman who is about to give birth in the temple breaks her amniotic water.
According to the Buddhist precepts, there is no bloodshed in the temple, and the previous acceptance of the victims has broken the vows, which is even more impossible to have children in the temple. But now that human lives are at stake, do you want to let these pregnant women and children die here?
In the end, after some careful consideration, Master Su Quan made a decisive decision, seeing death and not saving him is the biggest taboo, and the other taboos are not important now.
Then he ordered the monks in the monastery to vacate a secluded place in the courtyard, removed the oilcloth covering the Bodhisattva's body to protect him from the rain, and then temporarily set up a delivery room.
During this period, some monks persuaded Master Suquan not to break the vows again, which would be punished by the Buddha, but Master Suquan didn't care, saying that my Buddha is compassionate, saving people and water and fire is the first place, what will happen to those precepts broken?
In this way, pregnant women are born every day in the temple, and more and more new babies are born here, until three months later, a total of 108 babies were born, which coincides with the number of Buddhist Arhats, so they also have the title of Arhat Wa.
Later, in order to make those pregnant women have a balanced nutrition, Master Suquan did not hesitate to break the vows again, slaughtering livestock in the temple, and the monks in the temple also took over the cooking, but this made the monks who have been vegetarian all year round can't help but want to vomit when they smell this smell, only Master Suquan is still sticking to the front line, cooking for these victims with his own hands, this scene also touched all the victims present.
After the disaster, the mothers of these children made a garment out of the child's birth cloth and presented it to Venerable Su Quan.
Years later, these children born in the temple will return to the temple to visit Gen Suquan, who gave them hope of life, accompanied by their mothers.
