Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853–1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter. He was a pioneer of expressionism and deeply influenced twentieth-century art, especially Fauvism and Expressionism.
Van Gogh's works, such as Starry Night, Sunflowers and Wheat Field with Crows, are now among the most famous, well-known and precious works of art in the world. On July 29, 1890, due to mental illness, he cut off his ear and committed suicide by drinking a bullet on the Oise River in France at the age of 37.
Van Gogh created a total of eleven sunflowers in his lifetime. Two are extant, one at the National Gallery in London, England, and the other at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
