Led by the extremely mysterious Keith Lanier, Catherine could never escape the feeling that encountering this self-help organization was no simple matter. Despite Catherine's best efforts, India became more and more deeply involved in the cult and eventually joined its women's secret fraternity. They were branded with the initials of cult leaders, required to observe strict dietary rules, and forced to recruit other women as sex slaves. Lifetime said in a press release, "'NXIVM Cult: A Mother's Nightmare' tells the story of a mother who takes back her daughter at all costs, exposing the deadly allure of Alison and Keith and the mental and physical abuse suffered by India.".
