Set in London in 1862, James is a very ambitious young scientist dedicated to the study of weather forecasting technology, however, financial embarrassment prevents him from using his own hot air balloon to take the results of the research into the sky, so he finds a woman named Emilia.
Amelia, a very experienced hot air balloon pilot, is now walled with a painful past. She acceded to James's request, and the two began their adventure together in a hot air balloon, reaching heights never set foot in humans with wisdom and courage. However, the higher they fly, the greater the danger they face.
The story is based on real people and real events, but compared to real historical records, James's partner at that time was another male pilot, Henry. He was not only a passionate hot air balloon adventurer, but also a professional pilot who was second to none at the time.
Although it is different from the historical facts, it has to be said that the film is very appropriate for the change of the pilot's gender. In contrast to James, the male scientist's introverted stubbornness, and even holding the consciousness of death, forcing her to climb, just to satisfy her enthusiasm for exploring scientific truths; in contrast, Amelia is outward-looking, with many years of experience in flying hot air balloons, not only knows how to adapt to the test of life and death, but also because of the tragic experience of her husband's death in the past, she has a clearer understanding of which key critical point she must urgently step on the brakes and turn back, so that she can land safely.
For this adaptation, Director Tom Haber also clarified that although Emilia is fictional, the character is based on the nineteenth-century French hot air balloon pilot Sophie Blanchett, who was the first female pilot in history to fly a hot air balloon alone, and even the French Emperor Napoleon at that time often invited her to perform air performances at important festivals.
In this journey of adventure, James and Emilia have very different personalities, but they can perform their respective duties, complement each other, and are indispensable to each other. Therefore, the English title of this film, The Aeronauts, is also represented in the plural, symbolizing that the pilot is not just one person.
At the end of the film, they finally successfully approached the high altitude at the edge of the troposphere, at an altitude of 11278 meters, breaking the record for the highest human flight in a hot air balloon ever recorded, and completing this important journey to measure the appearance of atmospheric stratification for the first time.
